Stephenson's Rocket

Description

Robert Stephenson's 0-2-2 locomotive [Rocket](https://collection.sciencemuseum.org.uk/objects/co8084947/stephensons-rocket-steam-locomotive) from the [Science Museum Group Collection](http://collection.sciencemuseum.org.uk/). Manufactured in 1829 by Robert Stephenson and Company in Newcastle, close to today’s Newcastle Central railway station, Rocket won the famous [Rainhill Trials](https://www.railwaymuseum.org.uk/objects-and-stories/rocket-rainhill-and-rise-locomotive) to become the fastest locomotive of its time thanks to its innovative design. This 3D model of Rocket was produced using 22 high resolution LIDAR scans and over 2,500 detailed photographs taken in May 2018. More information on how the Science Museum Group worked with [ScanLAB](https://scanlabprojects.co.uk/) to create the model can be found in the [Science Museum Group Digital Lab website](https://lab.sciencemuseum.org.uk/scanning-stephensons-rocket-40916fdb4d20).
