The elephant bird was a massive, flightless bird that lived in Madagascar and went extinct a few hundred years ago. It looked like a giant, bulky ostrich with thick legs, a heavy body, and small, nonfunctional wings. Despite its huge size—up to 10 feet tall—it likely moved slowly and fed on plants and fruits.
