This sculpture depicts Bacchus also known as Dionysus the god of wine fertility and ecstasy in Greco Roman mythology. He wears a crown of grape leaves holds a wine cup in his right hand and a thyrsus a staff topped with a pinecone in his left. His relaxed downward gazing pose and soft bodily form evoke his divine attributes of intoxication pleasure and abundance. Cast in iron the figure conveys the spirit of opulence and rapture with a sense of solemn permanence.
