Description
Ammonites were marine cephalopod mollusks with coiled shells that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (201–66 million years ago). They are common index fossils, featuring complex, spiral shells with intricate suture lines, used by scientists to date rock layers. Often mistaken for coiled snakes, they became extinct alongside dinosaurs.
