Description
The Airbus Helicopters X3 (pronounced "X-cube") is an experimental gyrodyne built by Eurocopter, renamed Airbus Helicopters in 2014. It follows the Boeing X-wing (X-shaped rotor/wing) and Sikorsky X2 (two coaxial counter-rotating rotors) high-speed helicopter prototypes.
The X3 demonstrator is equipped with two combustion turbines that drive, via the main gearbox, a five-bladed horizontal main rotor and two propeller thrusters mounted on wing stubs. It is an assembly of a Dauphin airframe and an Eurocopter EC175 main gearbox with two additional outputs for the pusher propellers. RTM322
The machine does not require a tail rotor for anti-torque, as this function is performed by a difference in thrust between the two propulsion propellers. Combining the speed of an airplane and the agility of a helicopter.
On March 30, 2017, this unique X3 was presented to the Saint-Victoret Aviation Museum, enriching the collection of helicopters.
