Gusle

Description

A four-string gusle – złóbcoki (gęśliki) – formerly the essential instrument of every highlander band. They were made of a single piece of wood. They have a navicular shape and a narrow resonating body with a neck. They terminate in a pin chamber with a head in the shape of a long-haired highlander’s head. The instrument was made of a piece of sycamore wood; the additions are made of ebony wood. The gusle on display was made by Stanisław Czepiel (born in 1936) – the last luthier in the Pieniny region, a graduate of the Conductors School at the Academy of Music in Kraków, a musician and luthier.
