Description
Oviod-shaped macehead crafted from indurated limestone, a hardened form of limestone, presenting a light, yellowish-brown hue. A central, conical perforation runs through the object, indicating its purpose for hafting onto a wooden shaft. It dates from the Naqada II–III Period (c. 3600–3000).
Maces were significant weapons during the Predynastic era in ancient Egypt and subsequently evolved into potent symbols of power and prestige throughout pharaonic history. The heads, typically made of stone, underwent a clear typological development, progressing from earlier disc-shaped examples like this one to the later, more common piriform (pear-shaped) type. Both disc-shaped and piriform maceheads are frequently found in graves, highlighting their importance in funerary contexts. The piriform mace, in particular, became an enduring icon, frequently depicted wielded by the king as he ceremonially "smote" his enemies, even long after such weapons had ceased to be used in actual combat.
