The frame is also decorated with a bead molding. There is a recess on the inner edge of the frame for the pin axle. Brooches were an essential part of high and late medieval fashion and fulfilled two significant functions. The smaller versions were used to close the neckline of the undergarment or dress, while the larger, more sturdy clasps were used to fasten the cloak either on the shoulder or at the front of the chest.
