Description
Fragment of inscription of a chief magistrate. Roman, Flavian (69โ96 CE). Marble, plaster, pigment; 29.4 x 23.8 x 5.6 cm. ID: 0000.00.0818c.
Portion of a larger monumental public inscription. This fragment preserves one complete letter and two partial letters from the middle of the honoree's nomen (family/clan name).
Inscription:
* Latin: *A(ulus) Caeci(lius Ru)fus II vir*.
* Translation: "Aulus Caecilius Rufus, the chief magistrate (*duumvir*)."
Chisel marks are visible on the surface of the stone, revealing how it was first roughed out with toothed chisels before being worked more carefully with finer tools; apparently the first pass went a bit too deep on this inscription! The break on this stone connects with other pieces in our collection.
