Description
The Mátyás Hunyadi monument in Kőszeg was created in 1935 and originally erected in front of the main building of what was then the Hunyadi Mátyás Military School. The bronze statue was designed by Hungarian sculptor Székely Károly, who depicted the king as an armored standing figure with a sword. After World War II, the monument was removed from its original location and re-erected in its current location in 1953. The calm, upright posture of the figure and the clear, symmetrical composition emphasize dignity, authority, and a sense of justice, placing the work in the tradition of 20th-century historical monuments.
There are two important pictorial elements on the base of the monument. One is the coat of arms of the Hunyadi family, which shows the characteristic raven with a ring in its beak. Secondly, a bronze plaque depicting the former military school building reminds us that the monument stood in front of this building between 1935 and 1945.
