The Long Case or Floor Clock was invented in the mid-17th century with pendulums calibrated to swing once a second. Thereafter these became items of high-end decoration as well as reliable time pieces. In the early 18th century, the moon or lunar dial was added. Around 1876 Long Case Clocks became better known as 'grandfather clocks' due to a popular song retelling the story of the song-writers putative grandfather’s clock. This model would stand 1.95 metres tall, which is a typical size.
