Melus Stone, Llangian

Description

In the churchyard at St Gian's church on the south side is a stone dating from the 5th or 6th century with the inscription ‘ MELI MEDICI FILI MARTINI I(a)CIT’ – ‘Melus, the doctor, son of Martinus. He lies here’. A noticeable feature of this stone is that the inscription is a reference to the dead man’s profession – a doctor, which is a rare occurrence on inscribed stones anywhere in the UK The three holes at the top were drilled to mount a sundial. #walkingwiththeancestors Details | 302281 | Sites | Coflein https://share.google/HcvCJdzBi2ieHN4RP
