George Avery, a 19 yr old blacksmith, joined Company D of the 40th United States Colored Troops, in Greenville, TN. This correspondss with the Union troops arriving in Asheville in April of 1865. The troops liberated the local enlaved population and recruited about forty who followed them to Greenville. Avery is buried in South Asheville Cemetery, Asheville, North Carolina. The Headstone was scanned using an Artec Leo scanner and processed using the Artec Studio 18 program.
