It was part of Pope Clement XI's project to fill Borromini's niches with twelve colossal apostle statues, sponsored by King Peter II of Portugal. Le Gros was the only sculptor who successfully refused to work from the prescribed drawings by Carlo Maratta. His initial, highly emotional Baroque terracotta model was rejected. The final marble statue is more restrained: St Thomas holds a carpenter's square, with ordered drapery. His distinctive finger protrudes from the niche, pointing toward the altar, symbolizing moving beyond doubt on the path of faith.
