It may be the sole of a men’s shoe, a so-called caliga. Remains of approximately 86 iron hobnails are still present on the sole. The area of the foot arch is largely free of hobnailing; only a few nails are found there to secure the outsole. In the present sole, the surrounding row of nails in the toe area appears to have shifted slightly toward the ball of the foot over time or already at the time of disposal of the torn sole.
