The programme was launched on 2 March 1984. At the time, Airbus had 96 orders.[16]: 48  Air France was its first customer to sign a "letter of intent" for 25 A320s and options for 25 more at the 1981 Paris Air Show. In October 1983, British Caledonian placed seven firm orders, bringing total orders to more than 80.
