Due to its design it could be usable throuhout the year. The ring, which has a rectangular cross-section, features Arabic numerals 4–12 and 1–8 engraved from left to right. Corresponding to these, straight hour marks are engraved on the inner edge; furthermore, at the 6 o'clock position, there are two opposing holes for inserting the crossbar that supports the gnomon. On the outer periphery, at the 12 o'clock position, a break point where the clock was once secured is observable.
