The Maramures Gate, a richly decorated wooden passageway, has been located in the Laaer Forest in Vienna's 10th district since 2006. The wooden gate was a gift from Romania on the occasion of Austria's EU Council Presidency. It is artfully decorated with a variety of Christian and pagan symbols. The artwork was created by the renowned woodcarver Master Toader Bârsan from the village of Bârsana in the Maramureș region. The traditional gates from the Maramureș region are much more than mere entrance gates. They are considered a status symbol, a protective symbol, and a cultural hallmark of the region. With their massive wooden pillars and widely projecting roofs, they symbolically mark the transition from public space to the private, protected area of the family.
