Description
Bedrock decorated with prehistoric rock-art in the townland of Glebe (An Glaidhb),parish of Desertegny (Díseart Éignigh), barony of Inishowen West (Inis Eoghain Thiar), on the Inishowen Peninsula, County Donegal. Close to the edge of a cliff overlooking the steep-sided sea inlet annotated 'New Port' on the OS 25-inch map, which opens onto Lough Swilly. Panoramic views across the Lough to the Fanad Peninsula, Knockalla Mountain range (1203 ft. OD) defines the western horizon 6km to the WSW and the summit of Crockanaffrin (1137 ft. OD) is visible 10km to SW. Rock art defined by the ASI as; 'Geometric and other motifs mostly pecked out, though some are incised, on earthfast boulders and rock outcrops, and occasionally on cist roofstones and standing stones. These associations suggest a Bronze Age date (c. 2400-500 BC), though perhaps with origins in the Neolithic (c.4000-2400 BC). Rock art may be associated with metal deposits, boundaries and routeways'. Panel of rock-art (DG018-041----) 15m to the southwest.
