Fragmentary inscription of a magistrate ("A")

Description
Fragment of inscription of a chief magistrate. Roman, Flavian (69โ96 CE). Marble, plaster, pigment; 21 x 18.7 x 3.7 cm. ID: 0000.00.0818d.
Portion of a monumental public inscription preserving one letter and an interpunct (a dot separating letters and/or words in ancient inscriptions). The edge to the left of the "A." is straight and the back shows possible traces of attachment, suggesting that it is the beginning of the entire inscription. This would leave the "A." standing on its own, suggesting it may be part of a name: "A." was the standard abbreviation of "Aulus", a common Roman praenomen (given/first name).
The break on this stone connects with other pieces in our collection, helping to confirm our reading of this fragment. Full inscription:
* Latin: *A(ulus) Caeci(lius Ru)fus II vir.*
* Translation: "Aulus Caecilius Rufus, the chief magistrate (*duumvir*)."
