Artist: Günter Grass (1927–2015) Location: Papendiek / SUB, entrance to Paulinerkirche Object: Bronze cast, 1982 The sculpture is approximately 2.30 meters tall. It was created from a 1982 clay model by Günter Grass and installed for the 2004 exhibition Günter Grass: Bronzes – Terracottas – Works on Paper in the Paulinerkirche. In Grass’s body of work, the flounder (here referring to the halibut) symbolizes life experience and wisdom. A similar but smaller version, the “Bücher-Butt” (“Book Flounder”), served as the trophy for the Deutscher Bücherpreis (German Books Prize), a short-lived award presented in connection with the Leipzig Book Fair.
