The vast majority of padlocks are equipped with a similar mechanism, a design that has been demonstrated to be effective over an extended period. Consequently, a wide variety of locks can be distinguished primarily by their external design. At the close of the 18th century, padlocks with a triangular box were among the most prevalent types of lock in Europe. However, this configuration had already been in use for approximately two centuries. This object was digitized through the ‘Kulturerbe digital’ program of the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Public Service and Sport.
