Strade Dominican Friary, National Monument No. 172.  The abbey at Strade dates to the mid-13th century, when it first started as a Franciscan Friary, established by the Lord of Athlethan (Ballylahan), Jordan de Exeter. The Dominican friars moved into Strade in 1253. The priory was dedicated to the Holy Cross & was a daughter house of Sligo Dominican priory (SL014-068008-).  A papal indulgence granted in 1434  may have resulted in a rebuilding phase of the church.  The carving of the vulning pelican (from the Latin vulnerō, “to wound”) on the north wall of the crossing tower of the friary church dates from the 15th-century.  In Medieval Christianity, the pelican feeding its young with its own blood was a symbol for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross & the Eucharist.  Also known as the Pelican in Her Piety, the bird piercing it's breast to shed blood is an allegory of Christ on the Cross, a symbol of the Passion of Christ. Discovery 2 at the second visit: A partial cross slab (bottom part, but used here upside down) dating likely to the 13th or 14th century, judging from the fleur-de-lys motif. Also not recorded by the National Monuments Service (yet). There is no inscription on it, but they tended to be towards the head of the cross which is missing. It might still be in the graveyard somewhere, though.

Ballyellin: partial cross slab

Foxes are small-to-medium-sized omnivorous mammals in the Canidae family, recognized by their bushy tails (brushes), pointed snouts, and upright triangular ears. Highly adaptable, they live globally in diverse habitats—including cities—and are known for being solitary hunters, nocturnal, and clever, often using scent to mark trails.

Bat-eared Fox

One of four medieval cross slabs surviving in Ballycallan (St Brigid's) Graveyard. It dates to the 13th or 14th century. It is the lower portion of an incised cross, now sticking out of the ground upside down. It does not seem to be tapering and I'd say, it might have been wider once, because it seems unusual to just have one bevelled edge.

Not sure exactly which of the four it is, so I will have to assign the SMR numbers by their location on the HEV map.

20th Century Fox 2009 Ballyweg Version

One of four cross slabs described by Carrigan (III, 442) and subsequently the HEV. It is the bottom end of a tapering slab with an incised cross with fleur-de-lys terminals. This is the Westernmost I could see.
I did see the other two as well, but the one which apparently even has an inscription (KK018-072004-) was leaning too far to even scan it, and I could see no incision on the forth (KK018-072007-), so I left it unscanned.

Ballycallan: Cross slab 2

St Aban's Well in Ballymakerry or Baile Mhic Íre in County Cork. It is normally covered by a corrugated sheet to prevent pollution and people from falling in - it's too small for a whole person, but a leg could get trapped.

Strade Dominican Friary is a National Monument in state ownership (No. 172). The abbey dates to the mid-13th century, when it first started as a Franciscan Friary, established by the Lord of Athlethan (Ballylahan), Jordan de Exeter. The Dominican friars moved into Strade in 1253. The priory was dedicated to the Holy Cross & was a daughter house of Sligo Dominican priory (SL014-068008-). One of a group of 5 graveslabs on display against the south wall of the chancel of the Dominican friary church. This tapered slab served as the lid of a stone coffin. It bears a floriated cross in low relief, the terminals of the cross appear to form trefoils/bud & leaf or flower & leaf motif, a fleur-de-lis/flower of the lily. Fleury Cross/Lily Cross, terminals representing the flowering head of the lily plant. Diagonal arms represent the Crucifixion. Carving is best viewed in matcap render. The so-called Saint Abban's (or Abán) Grave near Ballymakerra/ Ballymakeery in County Cork. It is part of the pattern around St Abán's Well nearby. It consists of a cairn, three ogham stones and a bullaun stone, decorated with devotionalia. The patron day is March 16. This model was done on the 21st, but the local community arrived the same day about 10 mins after we left. They had been delayed by several things and actually celebrated on the 21st.

Ballymakeera: St Abban's Grave

Scientists have officially classified the structure known as the “Elf House” as *Amanita habitus domesticus*, a rare symbiotic organism blending fungal biology with architectural function. First documented in 2024 during a biodiversity survey in the Pacific Northwest, the organism appears to grow its own living quarters, complete with bioluminescent window‑like pores and a hardened lignin‑rich stem that forms a stable dwelling chamber.

Researchers believe the species evolved alongside small forest‑dwelling humanoids previously considered mythical. Soil analysis around the site revealed deliberate cultivation patterns, suggesting a co‑adaptive relationship between the elves and the organism itself.

The discovery challenges long‑held assumptions about intelligence in non‑animal life and hints at previously unknown ecological partnerships. If confirmed globally, *A. habitus domesticus* could redefine our understanding of habitat formation, symbiosis, and the boundary between biology and architecture.

Elf House - Mushroom

An unusual milestone built into an outhouse wall in Gorteenteen on the road from Ballycallan to Freshford. There is a second bit with the Freshford inscription in it. This stone seems like it might have been recycled from a previous use, because it looks like it's the fragment of an octagonal stone. The paint is modern, but the inscription is apparently 1818.

Milestone Gorteenteen

The shorter of the two granite architectural fragments which were either window or door jambs. The chamfered edge of this one is only c. 7cm wide, whereas the in situ ones in the doorway are 11-12cm wide, so maybe it is from the window or a different doorway.

The carving of a bird possibly an eagle/peacock with a serpent in its beak on the south wall of the crossing tower of the friary church dates from the 15th-century.  In medieval Christianity, the bird & the serpent symbolize the battle between Christ (or virtue) & the Devil (or sin). The bird represents divine power, resurrection, and Heaven, often fighting or carrying off the serpent, which embodies evil, malice, & the fall of man. This carving may represent 'Christ in Triumph'.
