Abbey Wall Ruins

Hore Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery near the Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland. It was founded by the Benedictine order in 1266. This model includes both the exterior and interior spaces, generated using a combination of aerial and ground photography (1500 images total). 

Most of the abbey was built in the thirteenth century, however many changes were made to the buildings in the fifteenth century including the addition of the tower in the centre of the transept. The cruciform church comprised, in addition to the chancel, a nave with aisles and two chapels to the east of each transept. The nave is exceptionally plain and the overall design is a perfect example of the conservative approach of the Cistercians. Hore was the only Cistercian monastery in Ireland where the cloister was positioned to the north of the abbey.  The ruins are now surrounded by fields of sheep and cattle and can be accessed by the public.

From the blue plaque: "BERMONDSEY ABBEY STREET BRIDGE. Designed by Colonel George Thomas Landmann, Royal Engineers (1780 - 1854).
The bridge is Grade II listed, and the central part was completed in 1836 for the London & Greenwich Railway, London's first railway line."

All Hallows by the Tower

The shape of the foot of the monstrance is similar to an oval with concave-convex  profiling. The ornately decorated slope of the foot is divided into four fields with symbols of the Eucharist (grain ears and bunches of grapes), two heads of angels and the coat of arms of the abbey. Two Austrian (re-marking) hallmarks are present on the flange of the foot. The stem is shaped like a candelabrum, made of smooth rings and decorated with foliate motifs. The pear-shaped nodus is decorated with angel heads. It features a sunburst aureole consisting of bundles of conjoined rays of different lengths. Reservaculum has a trefoil shape and is enclosed in a frame with floral and cornice board decorations. The frame is studded with blue-turquoise stones (artificial gemstones made of coloured glass).

Monstrance

Waltham Abbey Gateway

The cope was sewn from red silk damask of the bizarre style (currently it is pale pink), brocaded with silk and gold threads. The fabric is decorated with plant motifs. On the right side of the belt, the Szembek coat of arms features an appliqué of flat multicoloured silk and silver thread embroidery. The coat of arms is placed inside a cartouche, under a princely mitre with the patriarchal cross on top.
The cope is the surviving part of a red liturgical vestment set. It was mentioned as a set with “Szembek coats of arms” in an inventory dated 1763. The founder of this set could have been Stanisław Szembek (1650–1721) – bishop of Włocławek, archbishop of Gniezno, the Primate of Poland, the abbot of Tyniec over the years 1709–1721 – or Krzysztof Antoni Szembek (1667–1748) – also a Primate and the abbot of Tyniec over the years 1739–1743.

Red cope

Plaque from the 16th century with the depiction of the Dance of Death. The plaque cast in silver has 2 fastening pins on the back. 21x4 cm.

Between 1410 and 1425, a mural with originally 30 and today still 24 dancing couples was created in the abbey of La Chaise-Dieu. The Dance of Death is the representation of the influence and power of death that emerged in the 14th century. Death dances with everyone, whether king, knight, maid, clergyman or child.

Zwischen 1410 und 1425 entstand in der Abtei La Chaise-Dieu ein Wandgemälde mit ursprünglich 30 und heute noch 24 Tanzpaaren. Der Totentanz ist die im 14. Jahrhundert aufgekommene Darstellung des Einflusses und der Macht des Todes. Der Tod tanzt mit jeden, egal ob König, Ritter, Magd, Geistlichen oder Kind.

Dance of Death/Danse Macabre

An early 19th Century garden folly associated with nearby Ingress Abbey. Located under the Kent Fastway, on the east side of The Dell housing estate, Greenhithe, Kent.

The stone arch now only has 6 heads (one missing to left side) and leads to a cavern beyond the gate. The Historic England listing states, "grotesque heads which possibly came from the medieval London Bridge".

Barking Abbey Gate

The chalice has a circular foot with a small flange with a wavy pattern and four straight sections. The slope of the foot has one fold. The cylindrical pelmet of the stem overlaps the base. The nodus is slim, vase-shaped, framed by rings on both sides. The cup is slender with an enlarged edge; it is placed in a basket. The fields of the foot slopes, nodus and basket are alternately fluted and decorated with Regency patterns. The folds of the foot slope, stem rings, cup walls and the fields filled with Regency patterns are gold plated, while the fluted fields are left in a natural silver colour.

Chalice

In the center of the medieval quarter of Viterbo is the square and church of San Pellegrino mentioned in a document of 1045 as belonging to the Abbey of Farfa. In 1889 the façade was restored in Neo-Gothic style by Bishop Grasselli. It was badly damaged during the bombings of the Second World War.

Pew End Carving, Bath Abbey UK

The slope of the foot has two folds and is covered with floral patterns as well as Regency ornament and palmette shells. The stem of the foot has a bulging shape. The stem is like that of a candelabrum with a vase-like, fluted nodus enclosed in two hexagonal rings. The cup is slender with an everted edge. It is placed in an openwork basket made of floral and Regency ornaments and palmette shells.
It is one of the few historical works of gold that remained in Tyniec after the dissolution of the monastery.

Christ Crucified by Veit Stoss (original parts)

Stone cross (H 0.88m; arm span 0.7m) with fleur-de-lis/leaf-and-bud terminals standing in southern quadrant of Portumna Abbey (GA127-019----) graveyard (GA127-019013-), Co. Galway.  The centre of the cross head as has a lozenge shaped hole in the centre. The chamfered shaft is octagonal in plan. The cross stands in an octagonal-shaped base (int. dims. 0.45m N-S; 0.45m E-W). Portumna Abbey Cross (GA127-019011-)

15th century wall tomb in the north wall of the chancel of Strade Dominican Friary (MA070-067001-), Co. Mayo.  Described by archaeologist, John Hunt as; 'a gabled tomb niche, with an elaborate flamboyant traceried canopy. Below this, forming a tomb-front, are two panels boldly carved with decorated ogival niches beneath elaborate foliated crocketing and pinnacle work. In the first three of these are represented the Three Kings of the East, Caspar, Melchior & Balthazar, crowned & bearing their gifts of gold, frankincense & myrrh. In the fourth niche is Christ, King and Judge. In the second panel, the ogee heads are treated as a single canopy, the pinnacles being supported on corbels carved as worshipping angels issuant from clouds with wings displayed. Under this arcading are disposed four figures. The dexter, presumably the donor or commemorated man.   The other three figures, represent an archbishop with cross-staff in the act of blessing, St Peter with two keys & a book, & St Paul with a sword & a book'.

Strade Abbey Wall Tomb Front

Recumbent graveslab (L. 1.89m x top Wth 0.71m/base Wth 0.71m x T 0.1m) with Latin cross and fleur-de-lis terminals, in the chancel of Portumna Dominican Friary Church (GA127-019----), Co. Galway. One of five recumbent graveslabs in the chancel of the Dominican Friary Church. Faint traces of an inscription either side of the shaft of the floriated -cross.
