The Creation of Adam

This Stegosaurus skeleton from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science is more than 26 feet long and over nine feet tall. The bony beast is a permanent display with steel shaped around it, welded in place, and puttied together, making it impossible to take apart. Which means it was super difficult to scan! Triebold Paleontology, Inc. scanned the dinosaur using Artec Space Spider and Artec Studio software. The scanning involved crawling into the rib cage, then perching atop a step ladder just to reach the peaks of the big fan-shaped plates on the dinosaur’s back. The scanner captured everything from the nose to the tail spikes. Beyond aligning the scans, Artec Studio also reduced the mesh size to the desired level for manipulating the 3D model and 3D printing. Scanning time: 1 week - Processing time: 2 months (629 individual scans across 71 scan projects).

This species is native to the Americas, as far north as Yukon and as far south as Peru. It has been introduced in Europe, New Zealand, and Caribbean islands.
A population of 700 white-tailed deer in Seneca, New York carries a recessive gene for an all-white coat. About 300 of the 700 deer express this gene.

# Process

* The initial mesh was remeshed to an intermediate object with Meshlab (quadric edge collapse decimation) and **mmgs** (6.8M -> 950k tris)
* Details (ropes and sword) were splitted from the horse body (mark sharp edges -> edge split -> separate), and batch remeshed for better results.
* The resulting meshes (70k tris total) were then manually unwrapped (+manifold edges seams) and merged.

The material was created from scratch on the high resolution object before being baked to 2K textures:

* Mix of metals on the body
* Smoother metal on the edges

The giant isopod (*Bathynomus giganteus*) is a species of aquatic crustacean and a cousin to terrestrial "pill bugs" or "roly polies" that are commonly found under logs. These animals are found in cold waters with a depth between 310 to 2140 meters (1,020–7,020 ft) in the West Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The unusually large size of these isopods has been attributed to an effect called deep-sea gigantism, where invertebrates living in cold deep waters tend to grow larger and have longer lifespans (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_isopod).

Mounted Loon Skeleton

The common snapping turtle (*Chelydra serpentina*) is a large freshwater turtle of the family Chelydridae. Its natural range extends from southeastern Canada, southwest to the edge of the Rocky Mountains, as far east as Nova Scotia and Florida. This turtle species is noted for its combative disposition when out of the water with its powerful beak-like jaws, and highly mobile head and neck (hence the specific name *serpentina*, meaning "snake-like"). In water, they are likely to flee and hide themselves underwater in sediment.

Snapping Turtle

This is a shell from the chambered nautilus (*Nautilus pompilius*), known also as the pearly nautilus. The chambered nautilus can be found throughout the Pacific Ocean and inhabits shelf and slope waters near coral reefs with depths up to 750 meters. The shell of the nautilus shows countershading--where the bottom of the shell is light and the top is dark. This is a type of camouflauge that is effective at helping the nautilus blend in with the sea.

This skull belongs to an *Ovis aries*, more commonly known as the domesticated sheep. Domestic sheep can be found worldwide due to their association with humans. They are extremely versatile and are able to live in a variety of habitats ranging from mountain forests to desert biomes. Domestic sheep are believed to be descended from the mouflon (*Ovis gmelini*), a wild sheep native to the Caspian region.

Cette machine à fabriquer les bouteilles a été inventée par Claude Boucher. La machine a été mise au point dès 1894 à la verrerie de Cognac. Le brevet d'invention a été déposé en 1898. Elle fut primée lors de l'Exposition Universelle de 1900. Le modèle présenté ici est en fonte et a été réalisé en 1903 par la fonderie du Poitou.

Il s'agit de la première machine semi-automatique à fabriquer des bouteilles. Cette machine a permis d’améliorer la productivité en réduisant le temps de formation et en améliorant les conditions de travail. En effet, il était désormais possible de faire appel à de simples manœuvres et d’utiliser un compresseur mécanique pour souffler le verre.

Filamentous Horse Conch

Ce masque *Ejumba* a été exécuté entre la fin du 19e et début du 20e siècle chez les Diola au Sénégal. Il a été réalisé en vannerie recouverte d'un enduit noir et ornée d'un réseau de graines rouges et de cauris, de vraies cornes de bovidé, de boutons de porcelaine et de fragments d'écorce battue et peinte.

Connue depuis le 12e siècle chez les Diola au Sénégal et chez les peuples voisins, la cérémonie *bukut* est un rite initiatique marquant le passage de l’adolescence à l’âge adulte. Menée par les anciens, cette cérémonie correspond à une période de réclusion qui se déroule dans le bois sacré à l’écart du village au cours de laquelle les participants subissent plusieurs épreuves. Ils sont désormais des hommes et peuvent donc se marier, avoir des terres et participer à la vie politique.

Masque d’initiation des jeunes Diola au Sénégal

The grey fox (*Urocyon cinereoargenteus*) is an omnivorous mammal of the family *Canidae*, widespread throughout North America and Central America. Though it was once the most common fox in the eastern United States, and still is found there, human advancement and deforestation allowed the red fox to become more dominant. The grey fox is the only American canid that can climb trees. Its specific epithet *cinereoargenteus* means "ashen silver".

Chambered Nautilus

Ce sextant, a fait partie de l’armement du *Joshua*, le bateau du célèbre navigateur Bernard Moitessier, « le vagabond des mers du Sud ». Instrument inventé pour la navigation marine, il permet de se localiser en mesurant l'angle entre l'horizon et un objet lointain (clocher, montagne) ou un astre (Soleil, Lune ou étoile). 
Il est composé d'une petite lunette, pour viser l'horizon, de deux miroirs (qui projettent l'image de l'objet visé), d'un bras mobile et d'un arc de cercle gradué sur lequel on lit l’angle formé entre l’objet visé et l’horizon. L'angle d'ouverture est de 60°, d'où le nom de l'instrument.

Sextant

Il s’agit d’une maquette de sous-marin de haute-mer de type Brumaire (1912-1921), nommé Faraday. La coque est en bois vernis avec deux pavillons français. Du fil de fer est utilisé pour orner le dessus et mettre en avant les infrastructures du pont supérieur.

Lancé le 27 juin 1911 puis rayé des effectifs dès 1921, le sous-marin Faraday, de type Brumaire, a été construit en 1906, à Rochefort, d'après les plans des ingénieurs Lauboeuf et Lévy. Construite pour la marine nationale française peu avant la Première Guerre mondiale, la classe Brumaire est une classe de seize sous-marins qui ont tous participé à la guerre. Trois seront coulés.
