Messing around with refractive materials!

The [Mosquito scan](https://skfb.ly/6tFKT) (415k tris) is from [Geoffrey Marchal](https://sketchfab.com/geoffreymarchal).

**Modeling**:

* The scan was first remeshed with [mmgs](mmgtools.org) and baked to a lighter version (11k tris). 
* The amber fragment was roughly sculpted in blender ("I have no clue what I'm doing" style), keeping the main face flat (clay strips + flatten brushes).
* The small fragments inside the amber were done by splitting all the main fragment edges and applying the "shrink/fatten" tool, followed by a random Displace modifier. Exterior fragments were then removed with a boolean modifier.

**Material**:

The important parts are the roughness and normal maps, which are a mix of PBR textures (rougher edges, smoother main face), while the refractivity is just a product of tweaking Sketchfab settings: opacity set to refractive and using the object's roughness.

The egg model is a simple elongated UV-sphere, cut in two through a boolean modifier using a subdivided plane, which vertices have been randomized.

The egg white was simulated with fluids physics, before being manually sculpted to correct artifacts and smoothen it. The yolk was added manually later.

All the shell textures are procedural, and were created with Cycles nodes baked to the exported model before actually "cracking" it open.

As always, comments and criticism is always accepted! This onee took quite a long time and I really wanted to convey what the original artist had intended with a bit of differences here, such as physical moving clouds within the speakers, among other things like the cassette tape actually moving and flowers "growing" out of the player! I originally tried using a boolean to "cut off" the flowers and slowly uncover them as the door opened, but I guess Sketchfab doesn't like Blender modifiers that are still active when being uploaded, so I had to improvise. It's not perfect, but I'm content with how it came out! LMK what you think. <3

Inspired by fond childhood memories of watching Star Trek with Mum I decided to have a go at modelling the USS Voyager and pushing my substance painter skills.

Just in case my students ask me, this starship model took over 100 hours to create (30 hours to get good edge flow on the overall shape, another 25 hours on the greebling, details,  windows & flashing lights), 5 hours to uv map efficiently and another 40 hours painting the panels and decals from scratch.
The windows were by far the most painful part - booleans are a pain to fix.

USS Voyager 4K Textures Star Trek Intrepid

Exercise for CG Cookie's "Modeling with Modifiers" course. Assignment was to create a wheel with spokes/tire/rim, using modifiers where possible.

The spokes, spoke caps, rim, and tire made heavy use of the Mirror, Array, and Subsurf modifiers.

Punching the holes in the axle for the spokes was done with a Boolean modifier, which...I will probably never do again. Getting the topology to be clean enough for subsurf to work correctly after the Boolean modifier was applied required me to practically rebuild the whole thing from scratch. Maybe I just don't know how to use Booleans correctly. Maybe I need better techniques for retopo work. Likely both. :)

Overall, a fun and challenging modeling exercise!

After Venus in furs from the Velvet Underground ([listen on youtube](https://youtu.be/AwzaifhSw2c)), here is a marine wooden version of Venus de Milo, burnt, washed by the sea, then repaired by a skilled craftsman !

The modeling is done with simple boolean operation in blender, using an intermediate object sculpted by hand to carve the holes.

The materials are, as usual, a mix of various PBR textures and simple Cycles nodes setups to mix in the zones of influence of the materials.

There are way too many triangles and textures on that model in my taste... I'll probably upload a replacement with a more optimized version soon as I am quite happy with the results.

WIP - Aquamarine Venus

This 3D chess knight piece was created for educational purposes using Autodesk 3ds Max 2026. The model was built by following a spline-based modeling tutorial.

The workflow includes:

1. Using a reference image as a modeling guide
2. Creating the shape with custom splines and manually connecting vertices
3. Generating the volume with the Surface modifier
4. Fixing surface holes and adjusting normals
5. Smoothing the geometry using MeshSmooth
6. Finalizing the model and attaching the base using Boolean operations

This project focuses on learning spline modeling and surface-based techniques in 3ds Max.

This is a simple hard surface test model created in Plasticity as a beginner exercise. The goal of this model was to practice core CAD workflows such as boolean operations, extrusions. The object is designed as a functional test block with holes, cutouts, making it suitable for both visualization and 3D printing.  This is part of my learning process in hard surface modeling and CAD-based workflows.

Constraints have been added to the Top Frame and Bottom Frame to restrict movement along the Z axis. When placing the window in a wall select the Double Hung Window empty and align it to the outside wall. Create a boolean modifier on the wall object and select the Cutter object for the boolean operation in the modifier.

H4n Pro Audio Recorder

The ultrasonic helmet-mounted scanner was designed in Blender with a focus on ergonomics and technical detail. I began by modeling the helmet’s base shape with clean topology, then added mounts for the sensor unit. For the scanner body, I combined Subdivision Surface and Boolean modifiers to achieve smooth transitions and functional openings. The UV layout was optimized for efficient texturing, while materials were set up to represent metallic surfaces and matte plastic. Final rendering was done in Cycles, using studio-style lighting to highlight the volume and functional details of the design.
