Monument to Saint Mary in Horitschon.

The statue depicts the saint in a quiet, subdued pose, draped in a long robe and a cloak. Her serene expression conveys sorrow and deep contemplation. The weathered surface, covered in lichen, reinforces the impression of age and enduring presence.

At the center is the golden heart on her chest, surrounded by flames. This heart symbolizes love, devotion, and compassion. However, the sword piercing the heart is also clearly visible. This motif refers to the “Sorrowful Mother Mary” and represents the suffering she had to endure as the mother of Jesus—especially in connection with the crucifixion.

19th-century headstone of  Patrick Barron (born c. 1810) who died aged 19 in 1829 and was buried in Nenagh graveyard, Kenyon Street, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. The headstone was erected by his father Daniel Barron.  Inscription framed within a lozenge border.  The top of the headstone has a central crucifixion flanked by the Instruments of the Passion aka Arma Christi (Weapons of Christ).  The base of the headstone has been signed by the stonecutter W. P. Birdhill.  These are the initials of William Philpot a stonecutter based around Cragg quarry near the village of Birdhill on the Limerick/Tipperary border. In 1938 P. Barron (born c. 1870) who was a blacksmith aged 68 lived in Sarsfield Street in the town of Nenagh. According to folklore collected from Mr Barron the Barron family in Nenagh were shoemaker's up to one hundred and 50 years ago (c. 1788).   In 1901 there was a record of the death of Daniel Barron (born c. 1801) of Francis Street, a shoemaker. Best viewed in Matcap render.

Patrick Barron Headstone Kenyon St. Nenagh

Former mensa of a table tomb commemorating Thebald (Theobald) Purcell and his wife Catherine (apparently) of Clone (Clone Castle KK009-045----). I could only make out the "Hic iacet Thebald", the HEV did the rest. It is beautifully carved, once you can see it under all the moss and debris.

There is a side panel somewhere in the graveyard depicting the symbols of the passion and a front (short) panel depicting the crucifixion with Mary and John which we did find, but the scan didn't come out well. The HEV describes them all under the same number, but they are now separated and seemingly scattered over the graveyard and church.

Located in Strade Dominican friary (MA070-067001-), one of a group of five floriated graveslabs standing upright attached to the internal face of the south wall of the friary chancel. Tapered graveslab with floriated cross measuring 1.19m long by 0.39m wide that served as the lid of a medieval stone coffin/sarcophagus.  The surface of the slab is worn, but the outline of a long cross fleury carved in low relief extending almost the full length of the slab is visible.   Greek crosses rise from the terminals of the diagonal arms which represent the Crucifix and may represent a version of the Lily Crucifix.  Wavy diagional line near cross base has flowering terminals topped with a Greek cross.  Carving is best viewed in Matcap render. Flowering cross based on the Tree of Life.  In Christian theology, the crucifixion of Jesus transforms the cross from a "tree of death" into a new "Tree of Life," reversing the fall of humanity in Eden. The abbey dates to the mid-13th century, when it first started as a Franciscan Friary, established by the Lord of Athlethan (Ballylahan), Jordan de Exeter. The Dominican friars moved into Strade in 1253. The priory was dedicated to the Holy Cross & was a daughter house of Sligo Dominican priory (SL014-068008-). Clare, now erected inside the west end of the cathedral.  Runic inscription on the broad western face of the cross-shaft reads (TH) URGRIM RISTI (KR)US THINA which has been translated as 'Thorgrim raised this cross'.  A scholastic ogham inscription is visible on the narrow southern face which reads BENDACHT ... TOROQR ... that has been interpreted as BENDACHT FOR TOROQRIM or 'A Blessing on T(horgrim)'.   A naive Crucifixion figure is visible on the eastern face of the cross-shaft.  Dr Griffin Murray of University College Cork has identfied him as Thorgrim Furcap, a Norwegian baron, who overwintered in Killaloe in 1102 with the King of Norway, Magnús Barelegs, in his alliance with Muirchertach Ua Briain. Most famously carved by Michelangelo c. 1498-9, depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus Christ after the Crucifixion, symbolizing immense grief, divine mercy, & unconditional love.  It highlights Mary as an intercessor between humanity & God, showcasing her strength & deep sorrow ("Sixth Sorrow").  Described by archaeologist John Hunt as dating from the second half of the 15th century it is 'an unusual frontal, (or reredos from an altar?). In the centre is a Pietà with feathered angels above. The Virgin is clothed in a long gown over a kirtle, whose lower borders fall in symmetrical folds over her feet and with a veil over her head and shoulders. She is seated in a thronelike chair and the body of the dead Christ lies across her lap. The angels support a double arched and crocketed canopy above her head. A man and a woman kneel on left and right, presumably the donors'.
