That is what the Swedish explorer Sven Hedin called [Wan fa Gui yi Hall in the Putuo Zongcheng Temple, Chengde](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putuo_Zongcheng_Temple). In 1929, Hedin travelled to China with the mission to procure a Lamaistic temple to the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1933. An exact model was manufactured at the architect W. H. Liang's workshops in 1932 in Beijing. Two smaller models in scale 1:10 were also made. One of them was sent to Chicago as well. The other was taken to the Ethnographic Museum in Stockholm. The history of “Vēveri” in Vecpiebalga dates as far back as 400 years. It is mentioned for the first time in Swedish accountant documents in 1601 as one household and at the end of the 17th century it was marked on the map.

Kraków's bed

The costume of the Banjara people, consisting of over a dozen elements, comes from the village of Hampi in India, in the state of Karnataka. It was brought to Poland and resold to the District Museum in Tarnów in 2001 by an ethnology student (supervised by Prof. Lech Mróz, PhD habilitated) of the University of Warsaw, who conducted field research among nomadic peoples in India. The costume is displayed on a mannequin as part of the permanent exhibition Romani People: History and Culture, which has been presented at the Ethnographic Museum in Tarnów since 1990.

**Dowry chest**

1893, Rudawa, Poland

A painted wooden chest in a Skawina style. Painting techniques and ornamentation types were passed on from generation to generation. Sometimes, carpenters were not the creators of the painting decorations but their wives or daughters.

The dowry chest was an element of traditional equipment of a bride which she brought to a new household. They were usually placed opposite the entrance, in a visible place. A large painted chest was something to be proud of. After some time, they were moved to a less visible place.

2nd half of the 19th century, Rudawa, Poland

Cupboards were usually made by a local carpenter upon commission and their possession was indicative of its owner’s wealth. This furniture was used until July 1966 when it was purchased by the museum from Józef Mucha from Rudawa.

This painted cupboard consists of a base in the form of a low cabinet, equipped with shelves covered with a door and two drawers as well as a shallower cabinet with a glazed door. The interior of the adjustment with a shelf is painted dark blue and the background is also decorated with yellow and red stars.

19th century, Poland

In Poland, portable toilets like this chair were called, inter alia, a stool, a toilet or a cacatuar, a cacquet or a carafe, in French fashion. This item was located in a special separate room or was moved around the house. Grander versions sometimes resembled a real throne, hence perhaps the Polish term “sit on the throne”, referring to the toilet seat. The press advertised stools as “armchairs for going outside while staying inside”. Ebony wood.

It has a low seat, enclosed, with a flap under which there is a hole, intended for a chamber pot. A door is fitted at the back, which could be opened with a key in order to replace the vessel.

Cupboards were usually made by a local carpenter upon commission and their possession was indicative of its owner’s wealth. This furniture was used until July 1966 when it was purchased by the museum from Józef Mucha from Rudawa.

The surface of the cupboard is covered with a single colour primer – green obtained by mixing Parisian blue with bright yellow. Four little bouquets are put on profiled door panels. On the surface of the sides, on the external edges, a flower festoons motif is repeated. In the upper part of the base, a circular wreath of tiny leaves is painted.
