Recumbent 15th-century chamfered cross-slab grave-cover measuring 1.9m long by 0.09m thick, the base of the slab measures 0.64m wide which narrows to 0.54m, in the south-east corner of the chancel of Portumna Dominican Friary church (GA127-019----), Co. Galway. Chamfered slab the top of which has a sunburst-motif with human face representing Christ flanked by a serpent/monster with open jaws, dotted body and curving tail which runs across onto the the sunurst motif.  A triangular-shaped motif above the open jaws may represent the tongue of the serpent with fish beneath. Above this there is an eight pointed encircled rosette and an eight armed encircled cross between which there are two human heads above which there is a base for the shaft of the central cross.  Two four cornered knots either side of the shaft of the central cross which forms the centre of six rows of three encircled crosses with vine leaf terminals representing the blood of Christ. Portumna Graveslab (GA127-019001-)

15th century wall tomb in the north wall of the chancel of Strade Dominican Friary (MA070-067001-), Co. Mayo.  Described by archaeologist, John Hunt as; 'a gabled tomb niche, with an elaborate flamboyant traceried canopy. Below this, forming a tomb-front, are two panels boldly carved with decorated ogival niches beneath elaborate foliated crocketing and pinnacle work. In the first three of these are represented the Three Kings of the East, Caspar, Melchior & Balthazar, crowned & bearing their gifts of gold, frankincense & myrrh. In the fourth niche is Christ, King and Judge. In the second panel, the ogee heads are treated as a single canopy, the pinnacles being supported on corbels carved as worshipping angels issuant from clouds with wings displayed. Under this arcading are disposed four figures. The dexter, presumably the donor or commemorated man.   The other three figures, represent an archbishop with cross-staff in the act of blessing, St Peter with two keys & a book, & St Paul with a sword & a book'.

Recumbent graveslab (L. 1.89m x top Wth 0.71m/base Wth 0.71m x T 0.1m) with Latin cross and fleur-de-lis terminals, in the chancel of Portumna Dominican Friary Church (GA127-019----), Co. Galway. One of five recumbent graveslabs in the chancel of the Dominican Friary Church. Faint traces of an inscription either side of the shaft of the floriated -cross.

Strade Dominican Friary, National Monument No. 172.  The abbey at Strade dates to the mid-13th century, when it first started as a Franciscan Friary, established by the Lord of Athlethan (Ballylahan), Jordan de Exeter. The Dominican friars moved into Strade in 1253. The priory was dedicated to the Holy Cross & was a daughter house of Sligo Dominican priory (SL014-068008-).  A papal indulgence granted in 1434  may have resulted in a rebuilding phase of the church.  The carving of the vulning pelican (from the Latin vulnerō, “to wound”) on the north wall of the crossing tower of the friary church dates from the 15th-century.  In Medieval Christianity, the pelican feeding its young with its own blood was a symbol for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross & the Eucharist.  Also known as the Pelican in Her Piety, the bird piercing it's breast to shed blood is an allegory of Christ on the Cross, a symbol of the Passion of Christ. Strade Abbey -The Vulning Pelican

15th-century recumbent floriated cross-slab grave cover measuring 1.97m long by 0.55m top width which tapers to a base width of 0.51m by 0.05m thick, in the northeast corner of the chancel of the Dominican friary church (GA127-019----) in Portumna, Co. Galway. Slightly tapered chamfered graveslab, which is broken in two pieces, decorated with a floriated Latin cross in low relief. The shaft (Wth 0.14m) and arms of the cross are decorated with vine leaf or fleur-de-lis/bud and leaf motif.  A four leaf cross is visible at the top of the cross shaft and forms the arms of the cross. Portumna Graveslab (GA127-019003-)

Recumbent 15th-century chamfered cross-slab grave-cover measuring 1.91m long by 0.09m thick, the slab measures 0.88m wide which tapers to 0.74m, in the centre of the chancel of Portumna Dominican Friary church (GA127-019----), Co. Galway. The floriated Latin Cross is framed within a floriated border.  The shaft of the cross rises from an animal/possible lion based on possible depiction of mane running around the face of the animal.  Described in the Urban Archaeological Survey of County Galway as 'a slab, bears a Latin cross in low relief. The cross shaft (Wth 0.19m) is decorated with a repeated floral motif and there is a knotwork circle near the crossing. Each arm consists of a square panel: that to the S bears a Greek cross which was formed by subdividing the square into four segments decorated with fleur-de-lis motifs. 17th-century wall monument measuring 0.65m wide by 0.62m high inserted into the north wall of the chancel of Portumna Dominican Friary church (GA127-019----), Co. Galway.  Located immediately to the east of the doorway leading off the chancel to the sacristy. Inscription carved in relief reads:
PRAY FOR THE SOVLES OF PATRICKE CANVAN & CLARA CANVAN, HIS WIFE, W=HO RAISED THIS M=ONVMENT FOR TH=EMSELVES & THEIRE POSTERITY 1688

Portumna Abbey Wall Monument (GA127-019007-)

Located in Strade Dominican friary (MA070-067001-), one of a group of five floriated graveslabs standing upright attached to the internal face of the south wall of the friary chancel. Tapered graveslab with floriated cross measuring 1.19m long by 0.39m wide that served as the lid of a medieval stone coffin/sarcophagus.  The surface of the slab is worn, but the outline of a long cross fleury carved in low relief extending almost the full length of the slab is visible.   Greek crosses rise from the terminals of the diagonal arms which represent the Crucifix and may represent a version of the Lily Crucifix.  Wavy diagional line near cross base has flowering terminals topped with a Greek cross.  Carving is best viewed in Matcap render. Flowering cross based on the Tree of Life.  In Christian theology, the crucifixion of Jesus transforms the cross from a "tree of death" into a new "Tree of Life," reversing the fall of humanity in Eden. Strade Abbey Graveslab MA070-067009-

Located in the northern wall of the chancel of Strade Dominican Priory (MA070-067001-), Co. Mayo. This 15th-century wall monument is one of the finest surviving examples of its type in Ireland. At the base of the arch on the western side is a carving of a lion with tail between its legs,  rising above the body of the animal where it ends in a bushy tail.  In medieval Christianity, the lion was a complex, dual-natured symbol, primarily representing Christ’s power, resurrection, and royal authority but also, paradoxically, the danger of the devil or fierce, untamed power. Bestiaries popularized myths about lions resurrecting cubs, mirroring Christ's resurrection.  Lions were thought to sleep with eyes open, symbolizing Christ’s ever-watchful nature and divinity during his human death on the cross. Lions were frequently carved on church portals to represent protectors, guarding sacred spaces or representing Christ’s triumph over evil. The abbey dates to the mid-13th century, when it first started as a Franciscan Friary, established by the Lord of Athlethan (Ballylahan), Jordan de Exeter. The Dominican friars moved into Strade in 1253. The priory was dedicated to the Holy Cross & was a daughter house of Sligo Dominican priory (SL014-068008-). It bears a floriated cross in low relief, the terminals of the cross appear to form trefoils/bud & leaf or flower & leaf motif, a fleur-de-lis/flower of the lily. 15th-century stone corbel decorated with a vine-leaf motif in the south wall of the sacristy to the north of the chancel in Portumna Dominican Friary, Co. Galway. In architecture, a corbel is a structural piece of stone, wood or metal keyed into and projecting from a wall to carry a bearing weight, a type of bracket.  The word "corbel" originates from the Old French corbel (a raven) and the Medieval Latin corbellus or corvellus, which is a diminutive of the Latin corvus (raven or crow). It refers to the beak-like or bird-like projection of these stone brackets from a wall, a term appearing in English around the mid-14th century.  The underside of this stone corbel is decorated with a three-leaf motif carved in relief. The friary, National Monument No. 461, was built in the 13th-century as a Cistercian chapel dedicated to Saints Peter & Paul. In 1414 the O’Madden family granted the church to the Dominican Order. Portumna Abbey (GA127-019----) Corbel

One of five floriated tapered graveslabs set upright against the internal face of the south wall of the chancel of Strade Dominican Friary (MA070-067001-), Co. Mayo. Broken tapered cross-slab grave-cover which served as the lid of a stone coffin/sarcophagus.  Only the lower half of a cross-fleury carved in low relief with raised border running along edge of the stone.  The base of the cross has a fleur-de-lis or lily flower terminal consisting of acentral teardrop shaped projection flanked on either side by curling leaves. Vertical line in central teardrop may represent the stamen of the flower head.  Vertical groove running along centre of cross-shaft.  Floriated cross possibly symbolising the flowering lily known in French as the Fleur-de-Lys/Flower of the Lily.  The lily, is a  symbol of the Virgin Mary often appearing in art representing the Annunciation.  Associated with Resurrection & Easter & the triumph of Christ over death. 17th-century recumbent O'Madden graveslab measuring 1.98m long by top Wth 0.76m by base width 0.71m by thickness 0.13m, in the chancel of Portumna Dominican Friary Church (GA127-019----), Co. Galway. Floriated tapering graveslab has Latin cross with fleur-de-lis terminals rising from a stepped base carved in false relief. A central lozenge  frames a six-pointed star/rosette. A triskele is visible in the terminal of the right arm of the cross. Above the cross there is an I H S Christogram with Latin cross rising from the crossbar of the H.  An inscription beneath the base is in Latin. Within the frame around the sides and base of the slab another inscription indicates that this is a memorial slab to the Coghlan and Madden family dating to 1648.  Hic est Tumulus Corneil coglin et unctae maddin uxor seiuset successorum pro quibus orate pro april 1648 - This is the Mound of Cornelius Coghlan and ?? 15th-century quatrefoil window in the east wall of the sacristy to the north of the chancel in Portumna Dominican Friary (GA127-019----), Co. Galway. The term quatrefoile refers to an ornamental design of four lobes or leaves as used in architectural tracery, resembling a flower or clover leaf. Quatrefoil originates from the Old French word quatrefoil, meaning "four-leaf," which combines quatre ("four") and foil ("leaf"), derived from the Latin quattuor and folium.  The friary, National Monument No. 461, was built in the 13th-century as a Cistercian chapel dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. In 1414 the O’Madden family granted the church to the Dominican Order when the church was converted into a friary with the addition of a crossing tower and cloister with claustral buildings to the north of the church. Male kneeling donor figure to left of Pieta on front or altar reredos dating from the second half of the 15th century, standing up against the internal face of the eastern wall of the chancel of Strade Dominican Friary (MA070-067001-), Co. Mayo.  Described by archaeologist John Hunt as; 'The man has a similar costume to that worn by the bearded man on the tomb-front of the wall monument in the northern wall of the chancel.  The gole, however, is cut square below though the method of fashioning the garment is similar with the seams of the four sections of the front carefully indicated. The buttons closing the side placket of the gown and the belt with its pendant end are similar, and here also the rosary and the shuttle-like object hang from it'. Located in Strade Dominican friary (MA070-067001-), one of a group of five (see also MA070-067007- to MA070-067010-) no upright where they are mounted up against the south wall of the chancel of the friary church. Tapered graveslab (L 1.9m) of 13th/14th-century date with chamfered sides, served as the lid of a stone coffin. Grave-cover decorated with a cross-fleury or floriated cross with stylised leaf-like terminals or bud-and-leaf terminals.  Possible foliage/leaf/fruit/disc motifs springing from the shaft of the cross symbolising the tree of life.  A cross fleury is a cross adorned at the ends with flowers in heraldry. It generally contains the fleur-de-lis, trefoils, etc.  The Tree of Life represents God's gift of eternal life appearing first in Genesis 2:9 as a source of immortality in Eden & in Revelation 22.2 as a part of the new garden of paradise. The bird represents divine power, resurrection, and Heaven, often fighting or carrying off the serpent, which embodies evil, malice, & the fall of man. This carving may represent 'Christ in Triumph'. Strade Abbey Bird & the Snake

Carving of the Pietà (pity/compassion) on east wall of chancel of Strade Dominican Friary (MA070-067001-), Co. Mayo.  Most famously carved by Michelangelo c. 1498-9, depicting the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus Christ after the Crucifixion, symbolizing immense grief, divine mercy, & unconditional love.  It highlights Mary as an intercessor between humanity & God, showcasing her strength & deep sorrow ("Sixth Sorrow").  Described by archaeologist John Hunt as dating from the second half of the 15th century it is 'an unusual frontal, (or reredos from an altar?). In the centre is a Pietà with feathered angels above. The Virgin is clothed in a long gown over a kirtle, whose lower borders fall in symmetrical folds over her feet and with a veil over her head and shoulders. She is seated in a thronelike chair and the body of the dead Christ lies across her lap. The angels support a double arched and crocketed canopy above her head. A man and a woman kneel on left and right, presumably the donors'.
