Twelfth-century Water-Moon Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva in the Water-Moon Form), now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

From the sculpture’s description on artsmia.org:

“This form of the bodhisattva presides over his own paradise, Potolaka, which is described in scripture as a rugged seaside cave from which Avalokiteshvara could admire the reflection of the moon in the water. Appropriately, he appears meditative and relaxed and is seated informally in the “royal-ease” posture...Believers might look to a sculpture like this as a guide for their own journeys toward enlightenment.”

12th C CE Water-Moon Guanyin

Skull and neck of an adult green iguana (_Iguana iguana_, OUVC 10677), with annotations of some of the more obscure anatomical features. It was collected legally and euthanized humanely by Zoo Miami staff and provided to us for research and education. We scanned the head region on the OUµCT scanner in 2012 at a resolution of 90µm (0.090 mm). Scan data were imported into workstations running Avizo and digitally extracted the bones and soft tissues. The work on this project was done primarily by Alexandra Spaw, who at the time was an undergraduate student in Ohio University's Honors Tutorial College and now is a medical student at Ohio State University. Ryan Ridgely assembled these materials in Maya for upload here. For more 3D content on this specimen, check out the Visible Interactive Iguana site: http://bit.ly/1LzIU6x. > Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of compassion, sits here on a rock in the paradise of Potalaka, a bent leg connoting "royal serenity". According to the traditional visual vocabulary, she is gazing at the moon reflected in the surface of the water at her feet. Her crown bears an image of the Buddha Amithaba (Chinese Emituofo), to whom Guanyin is assigned in the Buddhist pantheon.
