Funko Base Female

The collection of the Art Department at the Tatra Museum in Zakopane includes two cameras belonging to Mieczysław Karłowicz – an outstanding composer, unsurpassed mountaineer, skier and photographer.  The composer purchased the presented object in 1909 after the success of his symphonic poem Odwieczne pieśni (Eternal songs) at the Warsaw Philharmonic. 
The composer’s new photographic equipment is a so-called travel camera for 13x18 cm film. The camera weighed less than 2 kilograms, and the bellows with the front standard and the lens were supported on two rails and thus, when folded, the whole set did not take up a lot of space (23 x 21.5 x 7 cm).

Mieczysław Karłowicz’s camera

Dit is een kopie van de beroemde buste van de Egyptische koningin Nefertiti, echtgenote van koning Achnaton (ca. 1353-1336 v. Chr.). In 1912 werd de sculptuur in de Egyptische stad Amarna opgegraven. De sculptuur wordt vaak een buste genoemd, naar een typisch Westerse vorm van portretuur waarbij alleen hoofd en schouders zijn gebeeldhouwd. Oud-Egyptische beeldhouwers maakten daarentegen in de regel enkel beelden van het volledige lichaam van een persoon. De buste van Nefertiti was dan ook niet bedoeld om tentoongesteld te worden. Het is een voorstudie voor beeldhouwers, die op basis van dit model officiële, volledige sculpturen van de koningin konden maken.

Gjutning av mexikansk stenfigur. Originalfiguren finnes i Museum für Völkerkunde, Stuttgart. Den är förfärdigad av grönsten, förskriver sig från aztekisk tid och föreställer guden Quetzalcoatl. Detta blir emellertid först klart efter en ingående analys av de, symboler i hieroglyffigurer, som täcka den utsökt arbetade figuren. Heracles , born Alcaeus or Alcides, was a divine hero in Greek mythology, the son of Zeus and Alcmene, foster son of Amphitryon and great-grandson and half-brother (as they are both sired by the god Zeus) of Perseus. He was the greatest of the Greek heroes, a paragon of masculinity, the ancestor of royal clans who claimed to be Heracleidae. In Rome and the modern West, he is known as Hercules. Many popular stories were told of his life, the most famous being The Twelve Labours of Heracles.

Herakles

The corset is made of French broached silk with Rococo floral patterns. It is lined with homespun canvas. It is made of three pieces: one at the back and two at the front. Six large inserts were sewn at the bottom, and metal rings along the cut, through which the ribbon used for tying was threaded. The corset was purchased in Dzianisz between 1887 and 1893 by Maria and Bronisław Dembowski, collectors of Podhale folk art, and in 1922 it was donated to the collection of the Tatra Museum under the provisions of Maria’s will.
It is one of the oldest well-preserved corsets from the Podhale region and the proof of direct or indirect cultural contacts stretching outside the region. It is patterned after the 18th-century bourgeois clothes.

Corset

The rifle slung on a strap is a single-barrelled, smoothbore, 12-gauge, percussion cap hunting weapon. The stock is made of sycamore wood and is hand carved. The carving depicts a dragon holding the edge of a stock in its mouth; nine teeth are visible. The banded part of the dragon’s body blends with the lock. In the 2nd half of the 19th century, the rifle was made, according to a factory pattern, by Wojciech Kułach, aka Wawrzyńcok, who was from Gliczarów. It was taken from a poacher named Bukowski-Tyrała from Kościelisko by the decision of the board managing the Zakopane estates of count Władysław Zamoyski. In 1931, the shotgun was purchased for the Tatra Museum from the collection of Marian Adam Liberak (1890–1931). He was a fan of folk art from Podhale, a journalist and forester, and a forest district manager in the Tatra Mountains in the 1920s.

Shotgun

The sheepskin coat was purchased for the collection of the Tatra Museum from Andrzej Kubin of Ratułów in 1929. The owner of the apparel was a sixty-year-old inhabitant of the village of Ciche, who had worn it on her wedding day. The sheepskin coat, tailored in a fashion typical for women, reaches to the knees and is slightly narrowed at the waist and widened at the bottom. It was fashioned from five pieces of leather: two front pieces, back piece and two sleeves. It is fastened with three wooden buttons covered with white leather, which are slid through loops. The stand-up collar is decorated with red leather binding.

Sheepskin coat

An older highlander woman with sharp features looks at us from the bust, with a face marked by the hardships of life, and yet with a strong and noble appearance at the same time. This hard, experienced, yet gentle woman was depicted with great care and diligence, as well as perceptible tenderness in approaching the model. It is not surprising, as the sculpture portrays the mother of the artist – Teresa Gąsienica Brzega, a simple highlander, a woman who had raised her four children on her own in the difficult times of the poverty prevailing in Podhale.

Bust of a highlander woman

A wooden stave vessel oval in shape which served as a bathtub for bathing little babies.
Only babies were bathed in this kind of bathtub, known locally as a kompacka. Great importance and ritualistic significance were attached to the first bath immediately after childbirth. The midwife responsible for this bath was called a babica. The activities performed at that time were thought to have a positive impact on the child’s future. Wanting the child to stay healthy and pretty, milk was poured into the water or a pinch of salt was added. After bathing, the water was poured into a place scarcely visited, over the side of kompacka where the baby kept its feet. It was commonly believed that if somebody did not follow such stipulations it might have had a bad effect on the child’s health.

Ett kotben från en kaskelotval som mäter 30 centimeter hög och 74 centimeter bred. Detta ben så väl som ett skulderblad har blivit kopplade till en mytisk historia och brukade visas upp i Visby domkyrka. De estimeras vara från 1600- talet och nämns även av Carl von Linné när han besökte kyrkan 1741.

Benen tillhör numera Gotlands Museum.
