This large-scale  horizontal and vertical planing machine, also known as 'wallcreeper', was used to accurately create flat surfaces on large pieces of metal. It could plane both horizontal and vertical surfaces without altering the setting of the workplace. 

Manufacturers did a roaring trade when shipbuilders and associated companies placed orders. These machines, however, were built to last. This machine for example, was used in  Renfrew maintenance works of the Clyde Navigation Trust from 1906 until 1984, which shows how reliable such tools were. 

Scottish manufacturers such as Thomas Shanks & Co. produced machine tools for companies worldwide. The scale of Scottish production was huge, and the development of machine tools made the large-scale manufacture of iron and steel ships possible. 




The 3D model was created as a part of ‘Scanning The Horizon’ 3D Digitisation Project.

Earth – Real Satellite Texture Model

This model represents Earth using real satellite-based texture data, showing the planet’s continents, oceans, and large-scale surface patterns as viewed from space. The texture emphasizes natural color variation across land and sea, providing a recognizable and realistic global appearance.

A subtle normal map is used to suggest broad terrain features without exaggerating surface relief, keeping the planet’s silhouette smooth and accurate at orbital scale. Lighting is used to define the day–night boundary and highlight the spherical form rather than simulate atmospheric or artificial illumination effects.

The focus of this model is on clarity and realism through authentic texture mapping, making it suitable for educational visualization, space scenes, and real-time rendering.

Iapetus – Two-Tone Surface Study

This model represents Iapetus, one of Saturn’s major moons, known for its striking two-tone appearance. One hemisphere is covered by Cassini Regio, a dark, carbon-rich region that contrasts sharply with the moon’s brighter, ice-dominated terrain on the opposite side.

The surface is depicted with subtle irregularities and gentle relief, emphasizing large-scale form rather than fine detail. The dramatic contrast between the dark and light regions is the defining feature of Iapetus and is believed to result from thermal processes and material redistribution over time.

Titan – Hazy Atmosphere & Surface Study

This model represents Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, known for its dense atmosphere and chemically rich environment. The surface is depicted with soft, eroded forms inspired by dune fields and icy plains, while a thick, amber-toned haze surrounds the body to reflect Titan’s famously smog-filled atmosphere.

The atmospheric layer is intentionally diffuse, obscuring fine surface detail and emphasizing Titan’s mysterious, low-visibility appearance. Subtle variations in color and roughness suggest methane-rich terrain and frozen organic material, rather than sharp geological features.

This piece focuses on mood and large-scale form over fine detail, aiming to capture Titan’s unique presence as one of the most Earth-like yet alien worlds in the solar system. Optimized for real-time viewing.

Io – Volcanic Surface Study

This model depicts Io, one of Jupiter’s Galilean moons and the most volcanically active body in the solar system. Io’s surface is dominated by vast lava plains, volcanic calderas, and sulfur-rich deposits created by intense tidal heating from Jupiter’s gravitational pull.

Bright regions represent sulfur and sulfur dioxide frost, while darker and warmer tones indicate areas of active or recently solidified lava. The striking color variation is a defining feature of Io and reflects its continuously changing surface, which is reshaped by volcanic activity rather than impact cratering.

This visualization emphasizes large-scale geological features and color contrast to convey Io’s extreme and unstable environment. The model is optimized for real-time viewing and focuses on clarity, form, and surface dynamics.
