This magnificent armour made [King Erik XIV](https://bit.ly/2XHLbZ0) of Sweden look imposingly triumphant. In true renaissance spirit, the motifs on the armour were borrowed from ancient myths, the characteristics of which lent themselves perfectly to the Swedish history and national symbols of that time.

The armour was probably made in [Arboga](https://bit.ly/2FQKrGy), Sweden, around 1562, from where it was sent to Antwerp in Belgium to be decorated by the goldsmith Elisaeus Libaerts. The opaque gilt ornamentation has been [repousséd](https://bit.ly/2xuxmy0) from the back and chased from the front. 

Perhaps the armour was worn by King Erik XIV on 2 October 1564 when, following a military campaign in [Blekinge](https://bit.ly/2KUVNNQ) in the South of Swedan, he returned to Stockholm with his military entourage. Whilst winding its way through the streets of Stockholm, the procession was showcasing chained prisoners of war from Denmark, a motif that can also be found on the armour.

Countess Wilhelmina von Hallwyl was a keen collector of Dutch and Flemish artworks of the Golden Age.

 
The diversity of artists and motifs is representative of the Hallwyl House Collection of Dutch and Flemish masters. The collection constitutes a kind of encyclopedia of the [Golden Age of Dutch Art](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Golden_Age_painting).

Zalipie, a village in southern Poland, is most famous for its folk art. Local artists have been covering houses in traditional floral motifs, a custom with roots back in the 18th century, when housekeepers would lighten sooty interiors of their huts by covering them with limewash. Through the 19th century the practice evolved into a habit of decorating cottages - both on the inside and on the outside - with colorful painted ornaments. The tradition has been kept up in the 20th century by dedicated artists like Felicja Curyłowa (1904-1974) and - thanks to her and her followers - to this day we can admire unique local art, and house painting contests are still held to support this live tradition. The 3D model was created based on one of the oldest, finest examples of a Zalipie painted house.

This feminine figure, with many jewels, holds a flower in her right hand and a bird, dove or pigeon, in her left hand. These motifs bring her closer to the bearers of offering, like the neighboring sculpture. The turreted crown, a motif from the Middle East, covered with a veil, however, designates it as a deity, Aphrodite, cult very developed on the island of Cyprus.

Wawel Royal Castle – National Art Collection

A Hussar szyszak was a type of helmet commonly used by the troops of the Polish Hussars, similar to the pappenheimers used in Western Europe. Usually, it was decorated similarly to the Hussar armour – with trimmings and appliqué motifs of brass stamped with geometrical ornaments. There were a few variants of this helmet: with a tip on the top, a high crest, or fan-like wings on the skull (the latter was popular in the 1st half of the 18th century, during the Saxon’s reign).

Hussar helmet

The Church of San Juan Bautista in Jodra del Pinar Guadalajara, Spain, is a small Medieval church built around the 13th Century in Romanesque style. The tower was added to the church subsquent to its initial construction. A well preserved portico exists on the structure's south side that includes beautiful capitals decorated with plant motifs. The 3D model was made in Reality Capture using 455 images captured with a DJI Phantom 4 Pro+ drone.

Model of a large (68cm or 27 inches wide) bronze shengding food vessel from southern China, now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

*Around the cauldron body are six kui (single horn) dragons in high relief climbing upward toward the lid. Supporting the vessel are three stout legs with stylized dragon masks cast into their shoulders. The surface is ornamented with interlaced dragons, incised scale patterns, and overlapping feather-like motifs. While most of the ornament was made by traditional piece-mold bronze-casting technology, the six dragons, with their complex, perforated shapes, were made separately with the lost-wax method.*

Shengding Food Vessel, around 575 BCE

The shape of the foot of the monstrance is similar to an oval with concave-convex  profiling. The ornately decorated slope of the foot is divided into four fields with symbols of the Eucharist (grain ears and bunches of grapes), two heads of angels and the coat of arms of the abbey. Two Austrian (re-marking) hallmarks are present on the flange of the foot. The stem is shaped like a candelabrum, made of smooth rings and decorated with foliate motifs. The pear-shaped nodus is decorated with angel heads. It features a sunburst aureole consisting of bundles of conjoined rays of different lengths. Reservaculum has a trefoil shape and is enclosed in a frame with floral and cornice board decorations. The frame is studded with blue-turquoise stones (artificial gemstones made of coloured glass).

Monstrance

12th-11th Century BCE Gui (food vessel) in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

"Stylized animal motifs predominate Shang bronze decor. The dragon, snake, cicada, ram, owl, tiger and even elephant can all be found. These creatures were almost always subordinate to the taotie mask which typically dominates the largest or most important register of nearly all Shang bronzes. This exquisite food bowl has three such masks clearly cast in high relief encircling its cauldron. Below each mask, in the foot band, are two confronting dragons shown in profile, while four similar dragons appear above each mask in the top decorative band..."

Vietnamese Bottle Vase (Yu-hu chun), late 15th century CE, now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art.


From the vase's descrption on artsmia.org:

*'The inspiration for Vietnamese blue-and-white wares was derived from China. The Vietnamese potters were more than mere copyists, however, and they developed a wide range of decorative motifs including peonies, lotuses, birds, flowers, animals, fish, and even landscapes. This elegant pear-shaped bottle is closely related to Chinese prototypes both in shape and decoration. The floral panels painted in underglaze blue are set against a wave background. Cloud whirls adorn the neck, plantain leaves appear below the rim, and lotus leaf lappets encircle the base.'*

Vietnamese Bottle Vase (Yu-hu chun), 15th C CE

Petroglyph J6, Khatm Al Melaha, Kalba, Sharjah.  Anthropomorphic figures in several styles, domestic goats, ibexes, and other motifs. All are common throughout the region. 

Khatm Al Melaha is a spectacular archaeological site on the coast of the Oman Sea near Kalba in Sharjah, UAE. It is one of the largest rock art sites in the UAE. There are also stone houses, a shell midden, stone tombs and other features that date this site has having occupations from at least the early Holocene to the 19th century.

Over 175 stones with petroglyphs were documented and close to 400 motifs were identified. Every rock with a glyph was given an ID number and a GPS coordinate. In total 25455 terrestrial photographs, 5244 drone photographs, 44 drone videos, and 182 GPS points (+/- 1cm) were done in a single day.

Petroglyph J6, Khatm Al Melaha, Kalba, Sharjah

The cope was sewn from red silk damask of the bizarre style (currently it is pale pink), brocaded with silk and gold threads. The fabric is decorated with plant motifs. On the right side of the belt, the Szembek coat of arms features an appliqué of flat multicoloured silk and silver thread embroidery. The coat of arms is placed inside a cartouche, under a princely mitre with the patriarchal cross on top.
The cope is the surviving part of a red liturgical vestment set. It was mentioned as a set with “Szembek coats of arms” in an inventory dated 1763. The founder of this set could have been Stanisław Szembek (1650–1721) – bishop of Włocławek, archbishop of Gniezno, the Primate of Poland, the abbot of Tyniec over the years 1709–1721 – or Krzysztof Antoni Szembek (1667–1748) – also a Primate and the abbot of Tyniec over the years 1739–1743.

Ce modèle se présente souvent par paire.
Ce vase bleu profond présente une panse quadrilobée
surmontée d’un col droit cerné d’un anneau finissant
sur une lèvre triangulaire pincée à gorge interne, de
couleur crème. Le pied est séparé de la panse par un
pied cantonné de quatre mascarons barbus posés sur
un cuir à enroulement. Les deux appliques modelées
jouant le rôle d’anses sont constituées de griffons ailés à
torse féminin. Deux lobes de la panse portent un motif
stylisé de fontaine. Des motifs géométriques complètent
l’ensemble du décor.

La calebasse est un objet emblématique des sociétés du Sahel camerounais. Fabriquée à partir du fruit séché du Lagenaria siceraria plus connu sous le nom de Toumoudé dans la zone, elle est utilisée depuis des siècles comme récipient, instrument de musique, objet de dot ou encore support rituel.
Dans le Grand Nord, elle peut être gravée avec des motifs symboliques ou décoratifs représentant le statut social, l’identité culturelle ou des éléments de la vie quotidienne.

Decoration above a door

Plate with divergent walls and a flat base, decorated at the center with the image of a stylized deity bearing a shell and a monstrous head, associating the figure with the aquatic underworld. Surrounding the central image are several oval elements related to water, as well as red and black volutes. A decorative band, divided into two sections, encircles the interior wall: one section features black triangles, while the other displays stepped fret motifs and additional abstract elements. The piece was ritually "killed", with a intentional perforation at the center.

Plate with Aquatic Underworld Deity

Polychrome tripod plate (black and red on orange) decorated with death-related symbols. At the center appears the image of a water lily leaf surrounded by three flowers with open corollas and three stamens. This motif, enclosed within a circle, is framed by a decorative band that extends across the entire interior wall surface, featuring crossed bones, bulging eyes, and what appear to be the eyes of supernatural beings with baton- or reptilian-shaped irises. A red band runs along the rim. The supports are conical, slotted, and rattle-type.
