GA-CRE-021-The Mist-Strider

A complete, exceptionally well-preserved "knobby" or "knobbed" macehead (Buckelkeulenkopf) carved from a single piece of dense, mottled stone. Typologically, the object features a rounded, bulbous body that tapers downwards into a distinct, short cylindrical neck or collar. Radiating symmetrically from the upper portion of the body are four prominent, low-relief rounded knobs or bosses. It is drilled cleanly through its central vertical axis with a straight, circular shaft hole designed to mount the weapon onto a wooden handle. The stone displays a naturally weathered, pecked, and smoothed texture with minor surface pitting. 

This macehead is an incredibly rare survivor dating to the Naqada IIB phase (c. 3500–3400). Knobby maceheads of this specific pharaonic form are virtually non-existent in secure Egyptian archaeological contexts. Its closest local parallel is a  steatite example housed in the Petrie Museum (UC15407). Additionally, a fragmentary example was found in Tomb 26 at Hierakonpolis in 2006.

Islamic Crescent Moon (Alem)

The upper half of a shroud-wrapped mummiform shabti in green faience. The figure wears a plain tripartite wig and a plaited divine beard. The hands emerge from a shroud to hold a pick in the left and a hoe in the right. The right hand also holds the twisted rope for a basket that is carried behind the left shoulder. The face is quite well worked with good details of the eyes, and a smiling mouth. The nose is now damaged. The ears protrude over the side lappets of the wig. The shabti is supported by a dorsal pillar. The front and sides of the figure are inscribed with six vertical columns of a crudely incised inscription representing Chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead. The fragment is broken horizontally across the lower torso, displaying a mottled green and brown weathered glaze patina. While the name of the owner is not preserved, the shabti can be attributed to Horudja, son of Khausienhap, based on similar examples. It dates to the Twenty-sixth Dynasty (c. 664–525 BC).

Alam V2 (Mosque Finial)

A piriform-shaped macehead crafted from breccia, a stone composed of angular fragments of varying shades (primarily reddish-brown with darker inclusions) cemented together, giving it a mottled and visually rich appearance. This macehead is unfinished and lacks the central perforation that would have allowed it to be hafted onto a wooden shaft. Its surface is rough and uneven, bearing marks of preliminary shaping rather than a polished finish. This macehead is characterised by its distinctive piriform, or pear-shaped, form, a development from the earlier disc-shaped types. It dates from the Naqada II–III Period (c. 3600–3000).

Maces were significant weapons during the Predynastic era in ancient Egypt and subsequently evolved into potent symbols of power and prestige throughout pharaonic history. The heads, typically made of stone, underwent a clear typological development, progressing from earlier disc-shaped examples like this one to the later, more common piriform (pear-shaped) type.

Piriform-shaped Macehead (W935)

A lentoid-shaped (lens-shaped) body of a specialised ritual flask manufactured from vibrant green glazed faience. The main body is robustly potted with two broad, convex sides that taper into a flattened, vertical band running along the vessel's outer edges. The upper neck section, which originally would have terminated in a papyrus-column or lotus-bud mouth flanked by small handles, is now entirely broken away and missing. Encircling the shoulders of the flask are concentric, incised bands containing delicate floral and geometric patterns. Just beneath this decorative collar, a band of incised hieroglyphic text runs across the upper shoulders. The glaze displays areas of weathering, surface pitting, and a mottled brownish-blue patina across both faces. This flask dates to the Late Period (c. 664–332 BC).

Hatchet

The reverse side is completely flat, unadorned, and exhibits a heavily weathered, mottled brownish-yellow patina with visible pitting from the original firing and glazing process. It likely dates from the First Millennium BC.

Piriform-shaped Macehead (W934)

A complete, small bag-shaped pottery jar composed of a coarse clay fabric containing visible inclusions of mica flakes along the body. The vessel was wheel-spun, while the pointed, tapering base shows evidence of having been finished by hand-carving. Due to poor or uneven firing conditions in the kiln, the exterior surface displays significant patches of dark, mottled discoloration. The body is slightly asymmetrical and misshapen from the production process, though it remains structurally sound with no visible breaks or modern repairs. Just beneath the rolled exterior rim runs a single, lightly incised horizontal groove. Attached to this line is a small, carefully applied clay appliqué representing a stylised Hathor-head or emblem, consisting of a central solar disc flanked by two curving cow horns.  This jar dates to the Second Intermediate Period (c. 1700–1550 BC).

Small Bag-shaped Jar (W5364)

Recycled glass discs dangle from the Braithwell Chandelier to form a textural shade. The discs vary in size and overlap on the wrought iron frame in a silver Granello finish to turn this glass chandelier into a mottled mosaic.
