In May 2012, five sections of the hull of an armed Elizabethan merchantman were moved to Stoney Cove Dive Centre, some 400 years after it sank in the Thames Estuary. The site consists of a section of bow and 15m of the port side, as well as an anchor.

The ship is now part of a unique underwater museum display where it also serves to train the next generation of nautical archaeologists. 

Originally discovered in 2003 by the Port of London Authority, excavation was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology. The hull remains and associated artefacts, including iron bars, lead and tin ingots, pottery and leather were recovered together with 4 guns, one bearing the insignia 'TG' and the moulded emblem of a grasshopper, the mark of Sir Thomas Gresham (1519 - 1579). He was a financier and adviser to Queen Elizabeth.

Twelve tree-ring samples from the hull suggest that the timbers were felled in England after 1574.

I made this model after seeing Dani Wootton's excellent '5 Fascinating Finds' video on the Time Team channel https://youtu.be/m-Z1uM9DMRI

This model illustrates Dani's description of how Roman pottery was mass produced using a mould with decorations pressed into the mould surface.  Click on the annotations on the model for more information.

In researching this model I visited the British Museum in London to get a closer look at the 'punches' that were used to create the decorative indentations in the mould surface.  I felt sure the surface of the punch must be curved to follow the contour of the mould but wasn't sure if the curve was more pronounced so that the punch would be rocked back and forwards when being pressed into the clay.  The example I saw at the British Museum (Ancient Rome room - display case 26 - see below) showed a punch with a figure on it and a slight convex curve which I think would have matched the surface of the mould.

The artefact is a half-relief ceramic model of a castle, crafted from fine brick-red-brown fired clay. The reverse is smooth with no signs of breakage. It can thus be classified as a printed relief, a printed sculpture pressed into a mould. Despite its small size, the model's front exhibits a sophisticated configuration: the castle stands on a high rock, has a hipped roof and chimney, and two towers of different sizes on either side. In front of it lies a fortification wall, and in the foreground is a zwinger with a low gatehouse or flanking tower on the left.

This object was digitized through the ‘Kulturerbe digital’ program of the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Public Service and Sport.

Model of a castle

Mould-made terracotta figurine of Demeter-Tyche standing wearing a long peplos and a mural crown. Her hair falls in braids upon her shoulders in the "amp hairstyle." She holds a cornucopia in her left hand which is resting on a square column. Her right arm is broken. The maker of the object is unknown, but the figurine can be dated to approximately 200 BCE and is said to be from Greece.  The University of Alberta purchased this item.

This is a PAPP-generated ceramic medallion built as a manufacturable low bas-relief rather than a standard chakra disc. 
On a 120×240 polar mesh, the script composes a central Divyadvāra sigil from a dodecagram of 4 equilateral triangles, a Vesica Piscis mandorla, 12 zodiacal petal-rays, a double zodiac ring with 12 markers, 24 radial web spokes, halo ripples, and a bindu. 
The border adds a hybrid annular signature: a 24-fold Ripple Crown plus a 12-petal Lotus Garland, while the outer lip is flattened for clean demoulding. Height is computed from weighted domain fields, 12-fold PAPP density, spectral modulation, seam subtraction, radial envelope, center taper, and 8-step terracing, then extruded into a closed body. 
Verified mesh: 57,170 vertices, 114,336 faces, watertight, χ=2.

The mould made of slate is designed for producing medallions with eyelets. One of the three medallion shapes is characterised by a crescent-shaped cut, while the other two are circular in shape. The latter are surrounded by a dotted border. On one of the pieces, a four-pointed star is enclosed by this border, while the other piece features four lines of imitation Kufic script.

Slate mould for medallions

Carved stone head possibly of a cleric of 15th/16th-century date now set in concrete at the entrance to Kilmurry graveyard (MA038-049002-), Co. Mayo.  19th century name and datestone of graveyard wall below the stone head.
