This is a 3D animation of a large adult Timber rattlesnake (*Crotalus horridus*) from New England Reptile Distributors (https://new-england-reptile.myshopify.com/). 

The raw photogrammetry scan was created using the Beastcam Technology, and the ventral side was added from a different snake.  The full model was retopologized and rigged by animator Daniel Daye from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

The 3D model was created with the Beastcam technology.

Polychrome tripod plate (black and red on orange) decorated with death-related symbols. At the center appears the image of a water lily leaf surrounded by three flowers with open corollas and three stamens. This motif, enclosed within a circle, is framed by a decorative band that extends across the entire interior wall surface, featuring crossed bones, bulging eyes, and what appear to be the eyes of supernatural beings with baton- or reptilian-shaped irises. A red band runs along the rim. The supports are conical, slotted, and rattle-type.

Plate with Death Motifs

Anthropomorphic whistle  in the shape of two dwarf musicians: one plays a small box drum with his right hand, while the other, positioned slightly behind the first, holds a rattle (chinchín) in his left hand. Both wear cloth headdresses, earspools, necklaces, and maxtatl loincloths.

Figurine Dwarf Musicians

Polychrome drum of the type known as Pax, classified as an “arm drum.” The surface is decorated with ten figures identified as musicians and dancers.  Within the latter group, a principal dancing figure is depicted performing with two sticks tipped with pompons, wearing a knotted maxtatl and a feathered headdress. Behind him, three seated figures appear to observe him with open mouths, as if singing; one of them holds a turtle shell. In front of the dancer, a procession of three figures advances toward him, wearing textile headdresses and jaguar-skin skirts, and carrying what appear to be rattles in their hands. Probably from the Alta and Baja Verapaz region. The piece has been restored.

Drum

Ceramic figure known as "The Musician", representing a man sitting with his legs crossed and holding a rattle with his left hand. The character wears paint on his face (red and yellow), ornaments on his arms, and a three-strand necklace (with clay balls applied). His ears are pierced with expanders with decorated edges. He wears a helmet or cap and a loincloth tied at the back. His back shows visible vertebrae or body decoration with piercing, inlay and scarring.

Musician with a Rattle

Tripod plomizo jar with a composite silhouette and a slightly curved, divergent neck. The body is decorated with parallel horizontal grooves interspersed with vertical series. The supports are oval in form and feature openings with rattle elements. The Cultural Property Registry record catalogs the artifact as from Baja Verapaz and dates it to the Classic period.

Rattle

Monochrome black tetrapod bowl with a composite silhouette, featuring mammiform supports with perforations and rattles. It has a well-defined lip molding. The bowl dates to the Protoclassic period and originates from the Central Highlands of Guatemala, specifically the Kaminaljuyú area.

Mammiform tetrapod bowl

Spherical ceramic rattle, brown, with a long opening at the bottom and two holes. The details, applied using a pastillage technique, form the head and facial features of a figure wearing a mask with a protruding beak or mouth. It has prominent ears and open eyes. A headdress with round appliqués, a headband with what could be tubular beads, and rectangular ear cuffs complete the composition.

Rattle with facial features

Polychrome tripod plate (red, black, and cream) with divergent walls, a medial flange, and a convex base featuring a central conical circular perforation. The supports are cylindrical, hollowed, and include rattles. The surface decoration consists of a rim with a black band and line, followed by a cream-colored band with geometric designs outlined in black. At the center, the figure of the God K’awil is represented, outlined in black, red, cream, and orange. At the center of the plate is an intentionally made circular perforation, corresponding to the act of “killing” the vessel, a practice commonly associated with intentional deposits.

Tripod Plate with the God K’awil

Rattle, or chinchín, with a globular body and a cylindrical handle. The rattle has two grooves and eight perforations, as well as clay beads inside. The number nine may be associated with the Wind God, Ehécatl, who is often represented with rattles and /or  duck or flattened beakbird masks.

Bowl with convex walls and pedestal support with rattles, orange with cream slip. The surface is decorated in low relief and consists of a horizontal band with two incised figures on opposite sides of the wall. Both figures are positioned reclining, resting on their right elbow with bent legs: the right knee facing forward and the left upward.

Black ceramic incense burner in the form of a shallow dish with a cylindrical handle. The dish has divergent walls and features relief decoration on the base and on the lower portion of the exterior wall. The handle features a central groove, and its end is modeled as a human-like head, with small rattle-like elements on each side.

Incense Burner with Anthropomorphic Handle

Tetrapod bowl with divergent walls and a concave base. It features mammiform supports with perforations and rattle elements. The surface is decorated with two spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyii) modeled in relief, placed on opposite sides of the vessel, with arms and legs extended in an ascending posture, as if climbing the wall of the vessel. The ceramic is orange in color with Usulután-style decoration, but it was later covered with polychrome stucco (green, red, black, white, and yellow), a tradition that began at Kaminaljuyú during the Early Classic period. The stucco decoration displays geometric figures and volutes. The vessel and its original ceramic decoration date to the Late Preclassic period.

Vase with Incised Snake Decoration

Whistle depicting a smiling male figure with a cheerful expression. In his right hand he holds a rattle (chinchín), suggesting that he may represent a musician. He wears long hair adorned with a cloth diadem, pendant ear ornaments (possibly feathers), and a necklace with a horizontal pectoral tied at the front. The skirt he wears features multiple horizontal folds with knots at the front. The piece appears to represent an act of self-sacrifice, as a knife or blade pierces the male member. Mold-made with hand-finished details, with red paint applied to the body and blue to the jewelry and garments.

Figurine

Incense burner with decorated tubular handle and rattle, composed of a circular dish with scalloped fillets applied along the exterior rim and around the base. Three zoomorphic figurines modeled in the form of birds are arranged along the rim of the dish. The handle is elongated and hollow, with rectangular and circular perforations along the sides. At the proximal end, a small bridge is incorporated, decorated with two birds modeled in profile. The entire piece is covered with a brown slip.

Tripod Plate with Dedication Formula

This altar offers a look at the royal court of Yaxchilán. At the center, King Itzamnaaj B’ahlam II  sits on a stone throne holding a three-pointed flint weapon. Before him, a warrior in a jaguar-skin cape presents a kneeling captive in a gesture of submission.  On each side, members of the nobility are portrayed carrying skulls on their backs and playing rattles embellished with feathers. The surrounding inscription opens with the date 7 Muluk 17 Yaxk’in (June 14, 764), and dedicates the monument using the verb pehtaj, commonly found on round sculptures. The text names several other individuals.

Tripod vase, brown - black in color, with straight walls, flat base, and rectangular supports with rattles. It features incised and grooved decoration forming two panels with stylized zoomorphic heads (serpents), placed between two incised perimeter lines below the rim and above the base edge. NAA of the ceramic paste indicates the Central Petén as the probable origin or place of manufacture.
