Artifact

A medium ellipsoid pottery jar, characteristic of black-topped redware (B-ware) pottery, manufactured from a Nile silt fabric. The vessel features a well-proportioned rounded body that tapers down to a small flat base, terminating at the apex in a direct rim with a slight, chipped lip. The main body displays a warm reddish-brown hue derived from the oxidised iron oxides in the clay, and the entire exterior surface, with the exception of the base, has been highly burnished to a smooth finish. Its iconic bi-chrome appearance was achieved through a careful firing technique where the vessel's mouth and upper interior were inverted into charcoal or ash, creating a localized reducing atmosphere that reduced the red iron oxide to black iron oxide. The jar exhibits a vertical hairline fissure running down from the rim, along with minor surface abrasions and salt encrustations. The vessel was excavated by Sir W. M. Flinders Petrie and the Egyptian Research Account in 1895 from grave 278 at the type site of Naqada.
