Namacalathus hermanastes

A collection of city buildings originally created for a personal project. Includes buildings based on real prototypes, and simple fictional ones. You will most likely recognize some architectural landmarks of New York and Chicago, adjusted for a simplified look. The exception is the waffle-shaped building, based on a typical municipal building of the American Southwest. The materials are repeated here and there, but you can live with that. This variety should be enough to create a believable background of the urban environment similar to American cities of the Rust Belt.

Mount Fuji Volcano in Japan.  This model features less snow than other models I made of this mountain.

Japan’s Mt. Fuji is an active volcano about 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Commonly called “Fuji-san,” it’s the country’s tallest peak, at 3,776 meters. A pilgrimage site for centuries, it’s considered one of Japan’s 3 sacred mountains, and summit hikes remain a popular activity. Its iconic profile is the subject of numerous works of art, notably Edo Period prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige.

*Strix varia*, or the barred owl, can be commonly found in dense forests and wooded swamps in southwestern Canada, Washington, Oregon and northern California. The barred owl is, on average 48-51 cm tall, and has a rounded-head with grey-white facial disc. Where many owls have ear tufts, the barred owl does not.

The small serrations on an owl’s primary feathers creates small vortices reducing noise from wind drag to near zero. The silent flight of owls inspired the biomimetic solution to wind noise caused by the Shinkansen Bullet Train as it travels near 350km/h. These serrations also inspired the redesign of  Ziehl-Abegg, Inc’s fan blades, reducing noise and improving energy efficiency. The Temple of Eshmun (Arabic: معبد أشمون‎) is an ancient place of worship dedicated to Eshmun, the Phoenician god of healing. It is located near the Awali river, 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) northeast of Sidon in southwestern Lebanon. The site was occupied from the 7th century BC to the 8th century AD, suggesting an integrated relationship with the nearby city of Sidon. Although originally constructed by Sidonian king Eshmunazar II in the Achaemenid era (c. 529–333 BC) to celebrate the city’s recovered wealth and stature, the temple complex was greatly expanded by Bodashtart, Yatan-milk and later monarchs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_Eshmun

The common snapping turtle (*Chelydra serpentina*) is a large freshwater turtle of the family Chelydridae. Its natural range extends from southeastern Canada, southwest to the edge of the Rocky Mountains, as far east as Nova Scotia and Florida. This turtle species is noted for its combative disposition when out of the water with its powerful beak-like jaws, and highly mobile head and neck (hence the specific name *serpentina*, meaning "snake-like"). In water, they are likely to flee and hide themselves underwater in sediment.

Snapping Turtle

[**Museum Village Düppel**](https://bit.ly/3q58lnq) is a seasonal open-air museum. It presents visitors with a reconstruction of an approximately 800-year-old village. The site of this former settlement has now been reconstructed with residences, storehouses, workshops, fields and gardens.

1967 marked the start of archaeological excavations in southwest Berlin. They revealed evidence of building foundations and farmyards of a village from the period just before 1200. Thanks to experimental archaeology, it was possible to rebuild the medieval village on the settlement’s original site. The village has developed into a widely recognised centre for experimental archaeology.

Temple of Eshmun

Paimio Sanatorium is a former tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Southwest Finland, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. 

Aalto received the design commission having won the architectural competition for the project held in 1929. The building was completed in 1933, and soon after received critical acclaim both in Finland and abroad. 

The building served exclusively as a tuberculosis sanatorium until the early 1960s, when it was converted into a general hospital. Today the building is owned by Turku University Hospital but is not functioning as a hospital; rather, the building has functioned as private rehabilitation center for children since 2014. The sanatorium has been nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This monument is located in Athens, Greece, southwest of the acropolis (37.970189, 23.732006). It was erected around 131 AD. I am not sure about the translation of the inscriptions. (They will be updated) Currently there are two interpretations regarding the inscriptions. 

* They stated the seperation between two parts of the city, the older and the roman.
* They were a form of boast claiming all of the city belongs now to Hadrian

Hitler highway, unfinished bridge at Ostopovice

One of the most interesting buildings of the unfinished Vienna-Wroclaw motorway in the vicinity of Brno is a motorway bridge located southwest of Ostopovice. On both sides there is only front side walls of the bridge with a free space within the body of a highway. The photographically very interesting building is frequently visited and the local youth and hosts occasional social events. Nearby is an information board of the local nature trail. The bridge is now part of a municipal nature park, which includes local small woods, an extensive gardening colony and cottage settlement.
