This item is an observational astronomical instrument used to determine the altitude of celestial bodies above the horizon. It consists of a frame restricted by two radiuses and an arc with a scale, an observation telescope, and a mirror system. The arc of the quintant is the fifth part of a circle, hence its name, analogous to quadrants, sextants, and octants (based on the fourth, sixth, and eighth parts of a circle, respectively).

Medieval telescope

Full name: **Astronomical telescope with a Gregorian mirror system**

This type of telescope was first described in 1663 by James Gregory (1638-1675), a Scottish mathematician and astronomer, professor at the University of Edinburgh and St. Andrews University in Scotland. Inventor of the first reflecting telescope. He proposed a method of determining an astronomical unit based on observations of the transit of Venus in front of the disc of the Sun. 

This particular telescope was engineered by Jesse Ramsden (1735–1800), optician, maker of scientific instruments, mainly astronomical and navigational ones, Fellow of the Royal Society in London.

This animation shows a lightning flash from September 2017 as detected by the LOFAR radio telescope in the Netherlands. The flash lasts just 1/5th of a second. The amplitudes of radio pulses are shown with colors from purple through blue up to white. To help track the propagation, the entire flash is shown in semi-transparent white.

# Technical 
We found data for the flash on the [website of Brian Hare from the University of Groningen](https://research.rug.nl/en/datasets/processed-data-for-the-relationship-of-lightning-radio-pulse-ampl). We wrote a custom reader for ParaView, then visualized the data as points and exported to glTF.

# Project 
This lightning flash was one of two observed by Hare and colleagues as discussed in [their paper from October 2021](https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2021EA001958).

Petavius is a large lunar impact crater located to the southeast of the Mare Fecunditatis, near the southeastern lunar limb. The outer wall of Petavius is unusually wide in proportion to the diameter, and displays a double rim along the south and west sides. 

Rev. T. W. Webb described Petavius as:
"one of the finest spots in the Moon: its grand double rampart, on east side nearly 11,000 ft (3,400 m). High, its terraces, and convex interior with central hill and cleft, compose a magnificent landscape in the lunar morning or evening, entirely vanishing beneath a Sun risen but halfway to the meridian."

The most favorable time for viewing this feature through a telescope is when the Moon is only three days old. By the fourth day the crater is nearly devoid of shadow.
