Funerary inscription of Callityche, a chamber attendant. Roman, Early 1st century CE. Marble, pigment; 29.5 x 18.4 x 5.5 cm. ID: 0000.00.1030.
Callityche was a hairdresser ("ornatrix") from the town of Puteoli on the Bay of Naples, in Italy. She was formerly enslaved by Aulus and Gaia Valerius. We don't know if Callityche, which means "good luck" in Greek, was her actual name or a name assigned to her by her former enslavers.
Inscription:
* Latin: *Valeria A(uli) et ((C))(aiae) liberta / Callityche / ornatrix*
* Translation: "Valeria Callityche, the freedwoman of Aulus and Gaia. A hairdresser."
