Hintze Hall, NHM London [point cloud]

The potto (*Perodicticus potto*) is a small (30–40cm) species of primate closely related to lorises and lemurs that inhabits the rainforest canopies of tropical Africa. The potto is nocturnal and feeds mostly on fruit, but has strong jaws that enable it to eat tree gums that are too tough for many other animals; around 10% of its diet consists of insects. 

Whilst moving it is usually very quiet, but has few natural predators as large carnivorous mammals cannot reach the forest canopy, and co-occurring birds of prey hunt during the day. If threatened, the potto can use its specially sharpened and elongated neck vertebrae to butt at an opponent. 

This specimen forms part of the Lapworth’s Humphreys Collection. Digitisation was carried out using an Artec Spider 3D scanner by Rachel Kruft Welton.

Humpback whale

**Description:** This is a 3D laser surface scan of the nearly complete cranium of *Toxodon platensis*. The skull was purchased on 26 November 1833 by Darwin. It is between 126,000 and 11,700 years old. 

This has been scanned as part of the Museum’s Darwin Fossil Mammals digitisation project. Find out more at www.nhm.ac.uk/darwinsfossils.

**Comments:** This is the holotype specimen of *Toxodon platensis*. When a new species is proposed, a specimen is chosen to represent the species. This is called the type specimen or holotype. Types are important  and it is the responsibility of museums to care for these and make them available for study.

The kangaroo is a marsupial of the order kangaroo, found mainly in mainland Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea. Some of these species are unique to Australia. Different species of kangaroos live in a wide variety of natural environments in Australia, from the cool climates of rainforests and desert plains to the tropics. Kangaroos are the highest and farthest leaping mammals.

Full skull of a raccoon (*Procyon lotor*). Raccoons are nocturnal, omnivorous mammals native to North America. They are easily recognized by their gray coat, black facial mask, and ringed tail. Their intelligence and front paw dexterity have allowed them to adpat to urban existence though their natural habitat  is deciduous and mixed forest.

Raccoon Skull

3D scan of a mounted skin of a female okapi (*Okapia johnstoni*). Okapis, or forest giraffes, are closely related to the giraffe. These shy forest creatures were one of the last large mammals to be known to science around 1900. Their distribution range is restricted to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 
An okapi pair went on display at the NHM Vienna already in 1910. 

This okapi female and a young male are Number 88 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 34 of the NHM Vienna. The same Hall is home to the [Southern Elephant Seal](https://skfb.ly/ooAwo), and [Steller’s sea cow](https://skfb.ly/onAWU).

The mammoth was a genus of pachyderms that lived 
during the Ice Age. There were many types of mammoth that ranged in size from as tall as a giraffe to as short and plump as a pig. The species appearing in Carnivores Ice Age and Carnivores: Ice Age is a woolly mammoth, a species covered in coarse hair that lived throughout the Northern hemisphere during the Pleistocene. Mammoths were similar in shape and form to modern elephants, but most species were larger, with longer tusks and smaller ears, and often a shorter tail.

Mammuthus is an extinct genus of proboscidean mammals in the family Elephantidae, commonly known as mammoths. They existed from approximately 4.8 million years ago until just 3,700 years ago, during the Pliocene (Late Neogene), Pleistocene, and Holocene (Quaternary) epochs. This model represents a realistic sperm whale, the largest of the toothed whales and one of the deepest-diving mammals on Earth. The design focuses on accurate anatomy, including its massive square-shaped head, thick body, and powerful tail flukes.

Special attention was given to the whale’s proportions, smooth surface flow, and natural silhouette to reflect its real-world appearance and presence. The goal was to capture both the immense scale and calm, mysterious nature of this deep-sea giant.

Animated Sperm Whale

This 3D model represents the heart and lungs of a rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), created with a focus on anatomical accuracy and educational clarity. The model demonstrates the close anatomical relationship between the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in a small mammal.

The heart shows realistic external morphology, including atrial and ventricular regions, while the lungs display correct lobation, size, and positioning relative to the heart. Together, these organs help illustrate how oxygenated blood circulation and respiration are functionally connected in mammals.

Ticks (order Ixodida) are parasitic arachnids that feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and reptiles. Though tiny, they pose serious health risks due to their ability to transmit diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and anaplasmosis. Ticks latch onto hosts using specialized mouthparts, piercing the skin and feeding for hours or even days.

Found in grassy, wooded, and humid environments, ticks are most active during warmer months. They detect hosts through body heat and carbon dioxide, then climb aboard to feed. After engorging, they drop off to continue their life cycle.

Preventing tick bites involves wearing protective clothing, using repellents, and checking for ticks after outdoor activities. Despite their reputation, ticks play a role in ecosystems, but their potential to spread disease makes awareness and prevention essential.

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are large, bristly-haired, omnivorous mammals native to Eurasia and North Africa, known as the ancestors of domestic pigs. These highly adaptable animals, weighing 66–272 kg, are characterized by their powerful, muscular necks, sharp tusks, and destructive digging behavior. Often nocturnal and fast, they can be dangerous.

Moschops (misspelled "Moshops" in Carnivores 2) is a four-legged herbivorous synapsid that is featured as an ambient animal in Carnivores, Carnivores 2, and Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter.
A very abundant large herbivore, it can often be found grazing across suitable habitats of FMM UV-32 using its short chisel-like teeth well suited for cropping vegetation. A very unique beast, Moschops' hind legs extended straight down like mammals', while its front legs extended outward and than downward like a reptile. Very skittish, this animal will flee at the first sign of danger. Moschops' diet is mostly plants, although it will occasionally eat meat in times of hunger.

Moschops ("calf-faced") is an extinct genus of therapsids (non-mammalian synapsids) that lived during the Permian period, 265-260 million years ago. Its hind limbs were small, while its forelimbs were powerful.

Hyenas are intelligent, carnivorous mammals found in Africa and Asia, categorized into four species (spotted, striped, brown, and aardwolf). Despite their dog-like appearance, they are taxonomically closer to cats. Known for powerful jaws that crush bone, they are highly social (clans), vocal, and proficient hunters that often scavenge.
