Victorian family heirloom jewellery - circa 1895

ca. 1500, Kraków, Poland, Hungary

An exceptionally valuable monument of sacred goldsmiths from the treasury of the Miechów monastery (Poland), which has survived to our times, is the richly decorated late-gothic silver chalice with a six-leaf foot. It is assumed that it was created around 1500, perhaps in a workshop in Hungary or in the capital city of Krakow. There are precious stones on the base of the chalice: sapphire, amethyst, ruby and emerald. In the upper part of the foot, figures of the Virgin Mary and an unknown saint are visible.

Gothic chalice

Cat goddess, Bastet, Egypt, Replica (h: ca.14 cm), Bronze Louvre (Paris). Private collection of bronzes about 1911. 
Bastet is the daughter of the sun god Re, depicted in Egyptian mythology as a cat goddess.
The cat was worshipped all over Egypt and was considered to be holy. Grain was very precious in ancient Egypt. Cats in particular offered effective protection from the vast numbers of mice and rats. They took the position of a house idol. The killing of a cat was sometimes a capital crime worthy of death.
"When a cat dies in a house, all the inhabitants of the house shave off their eyebrows [...]. The dead cats are taken to the town of Bubastis, embalmed and buried in sacred burial chambers. Herodotus (490/480 - 430/420 B.C.E.)

Bastet, Cat goddess, Egypt

Japanese armor type "Tosei dö gusoku" with helmet or "kabuto". It was part of the Romero Ortiz Collection, related in its 1888 Catalog to Daniel Datto and the context of the Philippine War. The warriors of ancient Japan or Samurai, belonged to a military elite at the service of a Daimyo or feudal lord. Their armor, the basis of their defensive clothing, consisted of different components that covered the entire body, pieces that evolved into forms of great showiness and a precious finish, especially in the Edo period. Edo period (1603-1868). In the collection of the Spanish National Army Museum (Toledo, Spain). Catalog number MUE-43243. 3D model made using the Artec Leo scanner. This work is part of the collaboration agreement signed in 2021 between the Ministry of Defence (Spain) and Global Digital Heritage for the digitization of the collections preserved by the Spanish National Army Museum.

Japanese armor, Edo period (1603-1868)

This is probably my most precious travel souvenir; it's a Balinese statue we brought back form Indonesia. It did not survive the plane check-in very well and suffered a bit of damage. If you look at the scan data carefully, you can see cracks here and there. The fingers and a tusk also broke during the trip home. Every time I see this statue, I’m transported back to the streets of Ubub.

Ganesha statue

The horn of Salt Diggers Brotherhood of Wieliczka is a unique Renaissance work of art commemorating the past wealth of Kraków salt mines. It is the only historical object of its kind preserved in Poland – a genuine horn of the aurochs, an ancestor of present-day cattle (the species became extinct in Poland in the 17th century). Framed in silver, it features a number of precisely executed metalwork techniques. Weighing almost 3 kilos, it was created in Kraków in 1534. The figure shown in the horn’s base is a salt miner, depicted as Hercules wearing antique armour. This representation symbolically emphasises the hard work of the Wieliczka salt diggers, excavating the precious mineral for hundreds of years.

Old town

This work was exhibited in the Warsaw Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in 1907. The sculpted Hussar from the Jan Matejko House is identical to the original painted as a panneau by Leon Wyczółkowski. 

Artist Leon Wyczółkowski created a decorative panneau of *Knight among Flowers*, depicting a Hussar sitting on horseback and blowing the horn against the background of a flowery meadow. 

The Hussar on horseback dressed in armour with gilded wings and eagle feathers. The horse is covered with a red-and-gold shabrack (cavalry saddle), decorated with colourful glass imitating precious stones, and fitted with a decorative gold harness.

Hussar on horseback

This automated clock is one half of a pair, the other one is a female lion.

When the clock strikes inside the lion its eyes start rolling, the jaws open and close.

The skin covering the machinery has become worn over the years. We will have to imagine a thick mane and a golden fur on the lion.

To modern eyes the clock looks like a toy. To the 17th century spectator, it was a precious little miracle and a display of human progress. The lion was a symbol of Africa, a continent that the Europeans had recently started discovering. The clock work was a result of the human efforts to control time and the machinery showed the new mechanical knowledge.


The drawer in the clock once contained a key to the clock work, possibly a description of it and, perhaps, remains of a real lion.


It was typical for the 17th century thinking that the lion clocks were a pair. Two halves forming a whole was an important concept.

I created this design inspired by one of the most precious objects belonging to one of my Dungeons and Dragons characters, related to their lore.
Its creation began in Zbrush, followed by retopology in Maya, and ending with quick texturing in Substance Painter.

They were deposited in hidden offerings (caches), with sacred objects such as jade beads, shark teeth, or stingray spines.  One name that describes this shell is Yohl ik'nal, ""the heart/center of the shell,"" as something divine or precious (according to comments by epigraphers David Stuart and William H. Mex).

medieval chest

Rock 12, the is the largest area of exposed bedrock at Seradina and, with its hundreds of carvings, constitutes an exceptional window on the world of the Iron Age Valcamonica tribes.

The wide surface is one of the most important and well-known in the whole of Valcamonica rock art and is marked by themes which make it unique in the context of the local Iron Age.

The central part of the rock is occupied by the imposing scene of a procession of spear-holding horsemen hunting deer and followed by dogs.  The dogs are unusually represented with their jaws wide open and tongue clearly visible.  The hunting horsement theme is not uncommon in the rock art areas of middle Valcamonica and may probably underline the aristocratic status of the carved figures.  Their high social status and wealth is illustrated by their possession of a horse, which constituted a rare and precious commodity in prehistoric times.
