Sailing Ship Model

Traditional rowing/sailing boat, type “Oselvar”, from western Norway. Still built today. Lowpoly model.

Built in 1898 on [Foula](http://tinyurl.com/y6hgdtlb), one of the most remote islands in the Shetland archipelago, this traditional fishing vessel (known in the Shetland as a 'fourareen') was made from pieces of driftwood. 

The crofter who built "Venus" used boat building techniques that had been passed down from generation to genaration and were similar to those used by Vikings on their Longboats.
"Venus" would have been used by the crofter to catch fish and  collect flotsam and jetsam from the sea.

In 1964 it was bought by Paul Earling Johnstone who gave it a deck and tiny cabin and a Bermudan yawl rig, converting it into a yacht. He used it for long distance ocean sailing (including a single-handed trip across the Atlantic in 1965) and it remained in storage in Savannah until 1982, when it became part of the collections of the [Scottish Maritime Museum.](http://www.scottishmaritimemuseum.org/)

Dish With Sailing-ship Design

Sailing ships were often bestowed with elaborate carvings and this wooden cat once adorned the famous 'Cutty Sark'. The ship was actually built in Dumbarton, on site currently occupying Scottish Maritime Museum building.

A cathead is a large wooden beam located on either bow of a sailing ship, and angled outward at rougly 45 degrees. The beam is used to support the ship’s anchor when weighing or lowering it. Many had a cat’s or lion’s head carved on the seaward beam end.

This little cat was a donation from the 'Cutty Sark' Trust and is the carved end of one of the ship’s original catheads. The beams were removed as part of restoration work, with the Museum receiving the donation in 1987.

*RNLB Jane Anne* is  an important survivor from Irvine's past, and a rare example of its type in Scotland. It's a double-ended, self-righting, pulling and sailing lifeboat, which was based at  the town's  RNLI station. It was manned mainly by the locally renowned Sinclair family and participated in seven rescues, saving  12 lives.

Built in 1898 by the Thomas Ironworks Co. in Millwall, London, *Jane Anne* began operating out of Irvine shortly afterwards and remained in use there until the station closed in 1914.
The boat's design meant it was open to the elements and relied entirely on the muscle power the crew who rowed it. The special construction of the hull, using diagonal cross planking, made it very strong with the enclosed ends providing buoyancy and ensuring that the crew is safe even in bad weather.

This model has been generated from 190 images taken with a Go Pro Hero 9 camera using Agisoft Metashape sofware at low resolution. The holes in the model show some of the problems that the software has coping with surfaces of water that may be in motion with wind ripples. The low resolution of the processing, in this instance, has removed texture details from the surrounding sand and from the ship's timbers. The vessel itself is presently unidentified but likely to the mid to late 19th century in origin, from the character of its metal fastenings. The overall size and shape suggests a sailing Trow or sloop - a typical smaller coastal trading vessel from that period. This site is one of a cluster of visible wreck remains is the centre of the long beach at Pembrey/Cefn Sidan. This cluster may reflect where master might direct his vessel to be beached, after recognising that the vessel had become embayed in the prevailing wind and sea conditions. Old Water Treasure

This model was generated from 93 images taken with GoPro Hero Black 9 camera using Agisoft Metashape at high resolution. The name of the vessel is presently unknown, but it is believed to be the remains of one of the many small oyster skiffs that once worked around Swansea Bay. Indeed, during the peak of the industry between 1850-1873, over 1 million oysters were being landed per year at the Mumbles. Oyster skiffs were a small specialised sailing craft, typically measuring between 37-40ft (11.2-12.1m) in length, with a keel of about 31ft (9.5m). The remains comprise a keel, large metal fastenings and a few frames on the port side and match these dimensions. The beach sediment transport direction is south-westward towards Mumbles Head. This was evident on repeat visits, with a build up of largely windblown sand on the northern side of the wreck. Otherwise, the beach sediment levels are reported to be staple.
