Lewis Chess Set

The most famous of the Govan stones, the sarcophagus represents a rare monument type in early medieval Scotland prior to the 12th century AD. It was rediscovered in the churchyard by a gravedigger in 1856 and was moved into the church in 1908. It is decorated with a hunting scene, different arrangements of interlaced beasts, and six panels of interlace, some of which appear to be interlaced snakes. It is not known what the lid might have looked like, but two complete drainage holes in the base of the monument (and the worn surfaces surrounding them) suggest that the sarcophagus originally acted as a coffin for the remains of a royal saint, but later functioned as a reliquary.

The Govan Sarcophagus - Govan 1

*MV Spartan* was built in 1942 and is one of only two surviving Scottish-built 'puffers': a type of steam-powered cargo vessel first built during the 1850s for use on the Clyde and Forth Canal. Now Spartan is on the Designated List of the National Historic Ships Committee and it was the first vessel in the museum's collection when it was established in 1983.

*MV Spartan* is one of the most important objects in the Scottish Maritime Museum's collection. It sits just outside the Linthouse building, where most of our collection is housed. 
The vessel is not availabe to visit for the public, but we have a [virtual tour available online](https://www.scottishmaritimemuseum.org/virtualtours/) if you fancy a walk up the deck and inside!

*SY Carola* is possibly the oldest seagoing steam yacht in the world. It was built in 1898 by Scott & Sons of Bowling at their shipyard on the north banks of the River Clyde. At 70ft in length, *Carola* is of steel construction with teak decking and deckhouse, and now has two masts. 

Built for personal use by the shipbuilder’s family, *Carola* was used as a yacht during the summer months and when not being used for pleasure by the family, it would take groups of senior yard staff on Clyde cruises. In winter it would have served as a tender and tug at the shipyard.

By 1964 it was sold to a private owner, before being purchased in 1981 by a Sussex firm and used for corporate hospitality. 

*Carola* became a part of the Scottish Maritime Museum’s collection in 1994.

Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn, near Finstown, Mainland, Orkney, is a late Neolithic (c.3200-2300 BC) 'Maes Howe'-type tomb.  The tomb is located on the side of the hill and the floor is cut into sandstone bedrock.  The chambers are constructed from fine dry-stone walling with corbelled roofs.  The mound measures c.55 feet in diameter and the main chamber is 8 feet 6 inches tall.

The tomb was partly excavated by James Cursiter in 1888 and more extensively investigated by Malcolm M. Charleston in 1901.  The tomb contained at least 8 burials and the skulls of 24 dogs.  The latter may have been a totemic animal, but they were probably deposited in the Bronze Age rather than the Neolithic.  The tomb sites above the Neolithic settlement site of Stonehall, which was excavated by Prof Colin Richards in the 1990s.

Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Donnain) is a small tidal island situated at the confluence of three sea lochs (Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh) in the western Highlands of Scotland, about 1 kilometre (5⁄8 mi) from the village of Dornie. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge that was installed early in the 20th century and is dominated by a picturesque castle that frequently appears in photographs, film and television. The island's original castle was built in the thirteenth century; it became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies, the Clan MacRae. However, in response to the Mackenzies' involvement in the Jacobite rebellions early in the 18th century, government ships destroyed the castle in 1719. The present-day castle is Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap's 20th-century reconstruction of the old castle. [wiki]

Eilean Donan Castle

This original double-ended Scotch boiler from "PS Waverley",  the last sea-going paddle steamer to be built, was manufactured by Rankin and Blackmore of Greenock and installed in the vessel when it was built in 1947. It is now a rare example of a boiler of this type and size.  Its impressive dimensions (over 5m tall) give a good indication of the size of the vessel’s engine room and machinery spaces.
 
The Scotch boiler was almost universally used during the ‘golden age’ of steam propulsion, and is another innovation developed on the Clyde by James Howden. The distinctive circular plates at the front provide access to the furnaces, where the fuel was burned. This boiler is double-ended, meaning that it has furnaces at both the front and back, which meet in the combustion chamber in the middle.

The team from the Museum's boatbuilding school have recently completed two skiffs as a joint project with Garnock Connections and Rathbone Training. 

Here you can have a closer look at the process behind the making of these skiffs. Their hulls are based on a traditional vessel: a Fair Isle Skiff, the model of which can be found in the  Scottish Fisheries Museum. It was constructed as a demonstration project in 2009 and started a true revival of the coastal rowing in Scotland. 

The original design of the skiff was modernised enabling anyone without a boatbuilding experience to take on a similar project with a bit of guidance from the experienced boatbuilders. Today people from all over the world build similar skiffs and regularly attend championships.

Traditional Boatbuilding: building skiffs

This model boat comes from the collection of [Dundee HeritageTrust](http://www.dhtcollections.com/) looking after [Verdant Works](https://www.verdantworks.com/), also known as Scotland's Jute Museum, telling the story of Dundee's textile industry. 

This is a model of a river boat which is typical of the type of boat used for carrying raw jute from the fields.  It has a curved shape wooden cabin with basket roof and on the side reads 'Pak Jute Mill Ltd' in white.

The 3D model was created by the Scottish Maritime Museum as a part of the Scanning The Horizon project, working with collections from Industrial Museums Scotland ([Go Industrial](http://www.goindustrial.co.uk)).

*RNLB Jane Anne* is  an important survivor from Irvine's past, and a rare example of its type in Scotland. It's a double-ended, self-righting, pulling and sailing lifeboat, which was based at  the town's  RNLI station. It was manned mainly by the locally renowned Sinclair family and participated in seven rescues, saving  12 lives.

Built in 1898 by the Thomas Ironworks Co. in Millwall, London, *Jane Anne* began operating out of Irvine shortly afterwards and remained in use there until the station closed in 1914.
The boat's design meant it was open to the elements and relied entirely on the muscle power the crew who rowed it. The special construction of the hull, using diagonal cross planking, made it very strong with the enclosed ends providing buoyancy and ensuring that the crew is safe even in bad weather.

RNLB Jane Anne

Baldoon Castle was a 16th-century castle about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south west of Wigtown, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, south of the river Bladnoch. The gate piers which were part of the entrance to the castle with bands of stylized rock-faced rustication alternating with lozenges. They are topped by cornices and molded scroll caps.[

Full name: **Astronomical telescope with a Gregorian mirror system**

This type of telescope was first described in 1663 by James Gregory (1638-1675), a Scottish mathematician and astronomer, professor at the University of Edinburgh and St. Andrews University in Scotland. Inventor of the first reflecting telescope. He proposed a method of determining an astronomical unit based on observations of the transit of Venus in front of the disc of the Sun. 

This particular telescope was engineered by Jesse Ramsden (1735–1800), optician, maker of scientific instruments, mainly astronomical and navigational ones, Fellow of the Royal Society in London.

This Pictish Stone is dispayed in the Aberdeen University Library, Aberdeen, Scotland. This stone was uncovered in the 1970s on a narrow spit of land between the rivers Isla and Deveron, close to where another five carved stones have been found. The symbols on this one are particularly finely carved, being an eagle and a 'Pictish beast'. A small cairn of stones was also found, supporting the idea that this stone may have marked the burial of a powerful person in the 6th or 7th
centuries AD.

The Mill of Benholm is a water-powered Category A (Grade I) listed historic Mill in a beautiful and peaceful setting of the historic Mill site with adjacent registered ancient Woodland the Mill Brae Woods.

The ‘Mill of Benholm Enterprise (SCIO)’ is the charity safeguarding the Mill of Benholm for generations to come by using the site sustainable as a community hub and community garden, but also developing the Mill into a visitor attraction.

Situated within the conservation area of Benholm near the coastal village of Johnshaven, Aberdeenshire. A restoration of the Mill was completed in 1995. 

The mill buildings are not only Category A listed, but also described by Historic Environment Scotland as ‘an exceptional and rare survival’.

The Mill of Benholm comprises of the mill with the waterwheel and kiln, the former miller’s house and byre, a mill pond all in a beautiful and peaceful setting with approx. 7 acres of land, orchards and gardens and a cafe.

Miss Elysa Fraser's Mausoleum, 1808, James Byres. The old kirkyard of Cluny in deepest Aberdeenshire hides a breath of Roman classicism designed with great assurance and executed with extraordinary precision. Miss Elyza Fraser's mausoleum, by her friend James Byres, the classical antiquary, of nearby Tonley, is a drum of fine granite ashlar with a moulded base set on a low square podium; it rises to a dome with oculus. The architraved doorpiece is topped by a fine coat of arms between two swags; the frieze is inscribed: ELIZABETH FRASER OF CASTLE FRASER MDCCC VIII. 

Miss Elyza left Byers 'my carriage and best pair of horses' but his plans to be interred in a similar mausoleum were later revoked.

The Mausoleum has recently been completely restored by the North East Scotland Preservation Trust.

Finzean Bucket Mill Community Interest Company has been founded to repair, maintain and operate the historic Grade-A Listed water powered sawmill, which specialises in the production of wooden buckets, which can be found near the village of Finzean in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. 

The Bucket Mill has a rich history. Built in 1853 on a site of a previous water powered sawmill, it was operated by the Brown family for three generations. It was built to produce turned wooden buckets, of a style which is now completely unique to the mill. By the late 1970s the mill was derelict, but was saved by Stan Moyes, who with the help of friends, led the restoration efforts in the 1980s and operated the mill throughout the 1990s and 2000s, cementing the mill as a local landmark.

The Finzean Bucket Mill CIC is the next custodian of the mill, which is owned by the Birse Community Trust.

A magnificent piece of early medieval sculpture, the Pictish St Madoes cross-slab, dates to the eighth century AD. Its imagery powerfully symbolises the authority of the Christian church. The whole is dominated by the ring-headed cross that fills what we can accept as the front of the slab. It is surrounded by biting dogs and with two lion-like creatures facing each other across the top of the stone.

The back of the slab shows three cloaked and hooded riders, probably churchmen (possibly a reference to the road and its users between St Andrews and Scone) and below them three Pictish symbols: a crescent and v-rod, a double-disc and z-rod and a Pictish beast. The symbols are much worn due to exposure to the elements when it stood in St Madoes churchyard. The stomne is now displayed in Perth Museum.
