Tulla Cross Slab (CL035-158----)
License & Attribution
Description
Early-christian cross-slab attached to the wall of the enclosure surrounding the holy well dedicated to St. Mochulla, patron saint of the monastery of Tulla, Co. Clare. The medieval church & graveyard of Tulla was built on the site of the monastery founded by St. Mochulla in the 7th century. The cross-slab may have been removed from the monastic site in the 19th-century. Sandstone slab decorated with a cross pattée within a penannular circle, the ends of which curve inwards to form a spiral motif either side of an incised line running down the centre of the stone. Beneath the cross head there are double scrolls forming interlocking comma-shapes similar to the double pelta designs. The stem of the cross has an upturned crescent shaped base with spiral terminals. Similar in design to cross-slab (KE042-060008-) at Reask, Co. Kerry. Hourglass motif & other markings visible on bottom right, may be apotropaic symbols or masons marks. Archaeological Survey of Ireland description at: https://tinyurl.com/mudr2btz
