Description
Martello Tower (DU005-033) No. 10 on Shenick's Island, inside a promontory fort (DU005-116), 1km east of the north Dublin coastline protecting the strand at Skerries, Fingal. Red Island Martello Tower No. 11 (DU005-018) visible 1.6km to the NW, Drumanagh Martello Tower No. 9 (DU008-006003) stands 3.7km to the south. One of 12 ordnance towers constructed to the north of Dublin Bay in 1804 by Colonel Benjamin Fisher of the Royal Engineers in order to defend the Dublin coastline from a French Naval invasion during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-15). Two storey high circular shaped rubble built tower covered with a lime render. Tower was entered through a 1st floor doorway on the landward side accessed by an external ladder protected by a projecting machicolation. The gun platform supported a 24-pounder cannon enclosed by a parapet wall carried on a cut stone string course. Privy stands to the SE. 8 boundary stones demarcating the military owned land are still visible. HEV entry at; https://tinyurl.com/4tfzu4kc
