Hl. Paulus

Description

The statue of St. Paul stands on the historic parish steps on Berggasse in Mistelbach and is one of the small Baroque monuments at the entrance to St. Martin’s Parish Church on the Kirchberg. The steps have been an important access point to the church for centuries and were renovated in 1724. As part of this Baroque redesign, two figures of apostles were erected: St. Peter and St. Paul. The ensemble of steps and figures is now a listed historic monument. The statue of St. Paul displays the apostle’s typical attributes. In his hand, he holds a sword, symbolizing his martyrdom in Rome, as well as a book, which refers to his letters in the New Testament. The statue was created in the 18th century by the sculptor Johann Martin Fischer. His works are characterized by lively movement, richly detailed robes, and expressive faces.
