Description
This model shows the geological setting of the August 7, 2024 magnitude 5.2 earthquake that was widely felt across southern California. The earthquake was caused by faulting at a depth of about 11 km. The fault system in this area is extremely complex, and produced the 1952 M~7.3 Kern County earthquake.
Colored contours show estimated ground shaking intensity (MMI) from the USGS. Earthquakes before August 7 are from Hauksson et al.; after are from Comcat. Earthquakes on August 7 are colored dark red; older are light red. Focal mechanisms are from the USGS and Cheng et al. (2023). The focal mechanism of the M5.2 is ringed. Colored fault surfaces are from the SCEC CFM.
