The childlike figure holds a sickle, the traditional tool used for harvesting grain, thus alluding to the most important agricultural task of the season. Next to the sickle is a whetstone, used to sharpen the blade. As a Baroque allegory, the sculpture combines the depiction of the annual cycle with an idealized, playful-looking child figure, thereby celebrating the fertility, diligence, and prosperity of summer.
