Description
The Central Building of the University of Guanajuato, located in the heart of the historic center, is the most iconic architectural symbol of the city. It is famous for its imposing green quarry stone facade and monumental staircase, making it a cultural and educational landmark in Mexico.
* The Staircase features 113 steps leading to the General Auditorium and the main entrance. Construction began in 1950 and it was officially inaugurated in 1952.
* Architecture: It has a Neoclassical style. It was designed by architect Vicente Urquiaga Rojas and fully completed in 1955.
* History: The site's roots date back to 1732, when the Hospice of the Holy Trinity was founded in the home of Doña Josefa Teresa de Busto y Moya.
* Current Use: Today it houses the General Rectory, administrative offices, and the Division of Law, Politics, and Government.
